Guys,
I'm new to the community, but have been collecting - and re-collecting in my adult life - since 1966. Being old-school I lean toward the familiar name of Topps when looking to collect new cards, but am impressed with many other products with HD photos and creative designs. I don't go much for wild designs, but for more traditional, i.e. pre-1980s designs.
How do you choose cards to collect in these days of multiple companies and companies within companies? Currently, I go with Topps, Upper Deck, Donruss, Fleer, Stadium Club, and Score, but have a few Panini and Action Packed.
Looking forward to continued collecting and hearing what you have to say.
Coram Deo,

If you're talking baseball, you're talking Topps.

since you like topps heritage, you may want to look at topps archives from last couple of years.
they use some older designs for modern players with a few retired stars sprinked in.
overall, topps alone has so many brands in past decade there is lots to choose from (heritage, archives, gypsy queen, allen and ginter, varied bowman brands, and I am sure there are a few I missed..you can browse those here in this database to see what you like)

Many people go for their favorite team only, which is a good idea in an era of one thousand subsets.

Good info, so far. Yeah, I'm really enjoying the Topps Heritage series and see that in 2017 they're going with the 1987 look, I believe. I'll check out Topps Archives. And, yes, I've also narrowed down my collecting to favorite teams, and some young up-and-comers from other teams.
Do you see a difference between the sports. It seems to me that basketball may have wilder designs. I hate the 1991-92 Skybox set.

Topps Heritage should be going with the 1968 design for 2017, 1969 design for 2018, and 1970 design for 2019, etc. Good luck on those high numbers. Don't forget to pick up the base set too.

I like to collect from all four sports, so I stick with one base set for each sport. I go with Topps for baseball, Topps (and now Score) for football, Hoops for basketball (with some Topps as well), and Upper Deck for hockey.
There were a lot of gaudy looking basketball sets in the 90's (went along with a lot of the horrendous looking uniforms, I guess). As for Heritage or Archives, I generally pass on those. I would get Archives if they stuck with reprints of old sets like they did for a couple of years.

I collect certain players from nearly every sport. Year and era doesn't mean much to me, if I like the design and/or person, I'll collect it.
Used to do a lot of set building, but that got out of hand. Still do some non-sport sets here and there since they tend to be much smaller compared to sports.
Team collecting got boring to me so I quit that a long time ago.
