He was famous for giving up that HR to Bobby Thompson in 1951 to determine whether the Dodgers or Giants would face the Yankees in the World Series--"the Giants win the pennant, the Giants win the pennant". The reason he was on the mound that day was because he was typically such a quality pitcher, having made the all-star team in 1947, 1948, and 1949. He pitched in the 1947 and 1949 World Series for the Dodgers.
