I ripped open a pack of 2014 Topps Series 2 and got a 1980 Bill Caudill with "topps 75th" stamped on it in silver foil. Problem is, the card was obviously originally from 1980 because it has gum residue (I think) on the front. So do I keep it as a novelty or is there a way to send it back to Topps to get one that isn't stained?

First a question: What is Topps 75th? They just had their 50th anniversary 12 years ago. Next, a wax stain on front of a card is easily removable. If it's on the back forget about it.

Off topic, but I have been wondering the same thing. What is Topps 75th?

Topps 75th is the Anniversary of Topps as a company. They began as just a gum company remember? The recent (12 years ago) 50th anniversary was for the anniversary of them producing baseball cards.

Oh the stamped Anniversary cards are "buy backs" they are original cards from whatever year they are from, in your case 1980 and for silly commemorative reasons they stamp the card (which lowers the SV/BV of the card). You could probably try to exchange the card, but there is no guarantee they have another of that same card.

I guess there isn't a good way to log those kinds of buy backs here, right? It doesn't seem right to log it in the original set (because it has the stupid 75 stamped on it), but it also doesn't make sense to try and make a checklist of buy back cards because (as far as I know) there isn't a checklist. I guess logging it in the original set makes the most sense.

For what it's
worth, on the non-
sport sets where
they did buybacks,
and I've submitted
the checklist to
the Database, I
just listed each
set under the
buyback checklist,
not a specific
card. It would
probably work a
little different in
a sports set, but
most of the non-
sports sets they
did buybacks for
don't go to a
specific person's
listing.

NJDevils - What is the simplest way to remove the residue from the front of the card without damaging it? I used Scotch tape to remove some of it, but couldn't get all of it.
I guess I'll just remove what residue I can and put the card with my Cubs collection.

I think those buybacks are most desired by Supercollectors. I got a hockey one of those, and believe it or not it wasn't in great condition at all! Usually buybacks aren't that bad, with the exception of very old cards (this was mid 80's I think). I would want one in my collection, but I personally am not paying a huge premium for a $1 card with a stamp on it.
Not terribly valuable cards, but unique to some collector's for sure.

I've been able to
successfully remove
wax damage (which
is more likely than
gum damage) by
rubbing the card
with my shirt.
However, they were
cards I'd just
opened (1991 Topps
Desert Storm in
2009, to be exact)
and hadn't been
sitting with the
wax getting pressed
into them in open
air for
years/decades.
Putting tape on a
card for any reason
is a REALLY bad
idea.
