After about two or three years, the creation of one really nice display case, and way too much money, with the acquisition of Solly "Circus" Hofman (or Hoffman), I have now procured an original baseball card of every player who was on the field during Merkle's Boner in 1908. I tried to post a picture of my display here. I failed. (Yes, I reread the thread on how to do this). I tried to make it my profile picture here. It went sideways. Suffice it to say, all the cards are posted on a felt covered baseball field with 3D bases, each player in postion, with the poem Baseball's Sad Lexicon and a complete description of the play. I never thought I'd have a tobacco card. Now I have 12. All the cards I have are pictured in my list here, which I just updated. I gotta say, and I know some purists might object, but I love the fact that there are four different kinds of tobacco cards represented: T205, T206, T207, and E95. Makes it that much more interesting. Mostly graded cards, 2s and 3s. Three ungraded, but I think they're authentic. I don't care about the grading, so each label is covered with a gold and white label I created myself that explains who the player is, postion, team, years of life, some significant fact about him, what kind of card it is, and what it's graded. That just makes it more personal to me. (And doesn't take away value, if I cared, because my labels can easily be removed.)
This has got to be my favorite "set" of cards, by far. I had so much fun looking up the history, getting all the cards, making the display with my daughter. It's awesome.
On to my next project: getting all the T207 Cubs and making a display for them. Talk to me in 2022.
Happy collecting!
