My PC is one of every single former Ohio State Buckeye currently produced. This includes all sports and non sports. I am about 2500 out of around 75000 towards that goal. I've actually added nearly 300 through trades on this site. I would not consider a serial numbered card at 50 or less to be "required" for collection completion; these would be bonus due to scarcity. Otherwise, I expect to someday own each card (as unrealistic as that may prove to ultimately be).
Beyond that, I also collect my favorite teams: Carindals (MLB), Chiefs, Celtics, Bluejackets, Crew SC. But if sacrificing one of these nets me a Buckeye I don't yet have, I'll likely accept that trade.

If we are talking about our personal collections, I will throw my hat in the ring.
I primarily collect players that interest me: Shawn Green, Derek Jeter, Buster Posey, Mickey Mantle, Joey Votto, Jeff Peterek, Matt Mantei, Tom Brady, Ralf Mojsiejenko, Dan LeFevour, and Joique Bell. I keep these cards in a separate binder.
Beyond that, I do collect Reds, minor league team sets, and autographs. These all have separate binders as well (well, the Reds one is still a work in progress). While my main collecting goals are finishing my Jeff Peterek and Ralf Mojsiejenko player collections by the end of 2017, I accept all cards of the above listed players that I don't already have.
Some of my goals include sending out as many cards for autographs through the mail as possible; I'm starting with hockey (as that collection is only 835 cards). Once I have an autograph of a player, if they are not one of the players I collect or a Red, I add all cards of that player to my tradelist. Basically, in an ideal world, I will be able to get all the cards in my hockey collection signed or traded once a signature of each player is collected, then move to basketball, football, and baseball.
I have begun dabbling in baseball set building, but only smaller sets (1994 Upper Deck Fun Pack) or sets that I have factory sets of (1988 Fleer, which I'm chasing errors, variations, and inserts).
A little complicated and sloppy at this time, but once I have more time post-graduation of college and more room to be organized, I hope to condense into a much better system!
-------------------------------
I'll never quit collecting entirely, but I am downsizing. Check out my COMC store and help me thin out what I don't want so I can buy cards that I do want. See something you like? Send me a message on here, and we can knock the price down quite a bit. I'll even take a bit of a loss if it means getting you a card you really want.

I always thought PC stood for Player Collection.

Almost any time I say PC, it means my personal collection. To some, it means player collection. That's usually for someone that only collects one person. My PC (personal) is:
*MLB - Anything STL Cardinals: that includes minor league cards and non-Cardinals cards of specific players (Ozzie Smith, Jim Edmonds, Scott Rolen)
I also have collections of many of the stars I grew up watching. A short list includes Manny Ramirez, Griffey Jr., Frank Thomas, Tom Glavine.
*NFL - Anything Panthers, Packers, Patriots: including college cards for players drafted by the teams. For players that switched teams during their career, it depends on the player as to whether I collect their cards in other uniforms. A short list of "yes to any cards" includes DeAngelo Williams, Muhsin Muhammad, Brett Favre, Reggie White.
As with MLB, I collect certain stars from other teams such as Barry Sanders, Jerry Rice and Torry Holt.
*NASCAR - I collect 17 different drivers from the past and present. Drivers, their cars and their pit crews.
*NBA - Mostly just Grant Hill now, but I have Player Collections of several other players from the 90's era.
I collect some completely random sets in any sport and those are also part of my personal collection. Anything that doesn't fit into the stuff above is for trade or sell. I rarely sell, but I trade a lot.
-------------------------------
NO PWE's EVER!!! PLZ PM me 1st before sending any offer. ONLY selling cards as of March 2024. No trades or purchases right now. _______________________________________________________________________ Largest total PC card collections by Team, then Athlete (as of 3/22/24): STL Cardinals (MLB) - 8810; Carolina Panthers - 2888; GB Packers - 1790+ cards Mark Martin (NASCAR) - 2038 cards; Jimmie Johnson (NASCAR) - 1875 cards; Jeff Gordon (NASCAR) - 1594; Ricky Rudd (NASCAR) - 839; Ozzie Smith (MLB) - 707

[apparently I missed the intent of this post, so I've removed my really long, half-asleep answer]

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

I always thought that was the case too. Over time, I garnered that when some said "PC" they meant "player collection" and others meant "personal collection". I generally use the "PC" term because it's pretty much one and the same, i.e. my personal collection is mainly made up of player collections.

I'm not sure anyone has answered the question as I understood it. Or perhaps they haven't answered the question as I want it asked.
My whole collection is my Personal Collection. So I didn't really understand when someone referred to their PC, assuming it's "personal," rather than "player." But I can understand that separating my Personal Collection from my For Sale/Trade list, which are the cards that I don't want anymore. But what else is there to contrast the PC with? I don't understand. The original poster came close to suggesting the answer and asked a question I also wonder about. PC makes sense if you're a dealer, with tens of thousands of cards for sale. They you might have a bunch that are your PC, but the rest of what you own isn't in your PC. Is that the contrast people are making? It just seems an odd usage, but perhaps that's only from my perspective on collecting. I don't try to collect cards that would be doubles. I never purchase cards that woudn't be part of my PC, unless they are in a blind lot. Then they immediately get sold or traded. Do some folks buy stuff specifically and only for the purpose of trading it? I guess they do....
The bullet point lists are cool and interesting. But I already understood that people collect all sorts of different things. Generally, that's on people's profile pages. I'll stop babbling and flip the question: What cards do you have that AREN'T in your personal collection? And why do you have them?

Cards I don't consider part of my collection are my DUPS. I have always just sorted them and put them in boxes, because as I have gotten older there is nobody I know to trade them with and I don't want to sell them to a dealer.

V3, the answer is, because they came in packs, and I have no control over what is in a pack.
