Trying to acquire one card for every for every set, insert, parralle, minor, euro, team issue, oddball etc sets produced for Hockey. Been an interesting project.

I'm with you on the "same backs as the 'base' set" thing. I consider Traded/Update sets to just be like "high-series" cards from the '60s. I also integrate a lot of the factory bonus inserts into my overall "set" for each year.

100% agreement here. Wish Topps would just name the update set Series 3 and continue the numbers. I believe they would sell way more then since people like me would HAVE to have it because it would make my set incomplete if I didn't. I know many mambers do not collect as much of the update as the other series just from the trades I have tried to make.

Huh. Interesting hypothetical. Right now, I only collect base sets. No updates, traded, etc. They're complete. I'm happy. And I move on. I wonder how I'd react to a "third series" being a continuation of the "set." I might well purchase them under those circumstances, which is kind of weird reasoning.
I might not, though, because I was always content with the understanding that each year's set is more about what happened the year before than it is about the current year. I was also always content to have one base card of every player -- plus leader cards, or all-star cards, or whatever, each year. So I saw no need for traded and update sets, which, I presume, involve essentially reissuing cards of the same players on their new teams. But if it was all one set...I dunno.

Make everyone happy/miserable. Do two versions of every update card: start the set with card number 661, but do a variation of the same card as card number U-1. Continue for all 330 cards. Everybody will not only need them to complete the base set, but will also need the variations, which would technically be a different set.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

I think I just became physically sick reading this idea. Seriously though, don't say things like that or Topps will hear you and get to work on it immediately. :)
