Yeah, my thinking is if I get some of those in the packs I buy then great. One of the reasons I buy packs is for the cool stuff I wouldn't buy otherwise. But if don't, then I won't buy them when I need to complete my set - unless somebody is selling them super cheap. These days just what defines a "set" has really been muddied. Is it every variation of every card? I sure hope not, because if it is I have LOTS of incomplete "sets". I guess it all just comes down to what each of us as individuals thinks our sets should be. Some people need every card while others just want the base cards. Basically I guess it all comes down to what allows us to sleep at night. If I can't sleep because I'm missing that pink refractor Darwin Barney alternate background deckle edge parallel, then I guess that's what defines whether my "set" is incomplete.

I agree with what others before me have said, that is for you to decide yourself. Personally I get great joy out of trying to complete sets pack by pack. It makes every new card exciting and really adds value to cards that would otherwise be considered worthless. It dons't take someone with a PhD in to realize that this isn't the most economical way to go about completing. But if you can afford it and accept that you will have stacks of duplicates the "purist" way set-building can be tons of fun.

I think you can have different "levels" of a complete set. You have standard base, SP's, variations, etc. To me, a standard hockey set is about 60, 90, or 100 base cards. Then there are usually 2 or 3 tiers of SP's, be they legends or rookies. Some of those are very low numbered. I don't like considering SP's as part of the set unless they are all #'d to the same number, or all have the same pull ratio (1:12, etc.)
The amount of parallels for them? Ugh.....don't even bother. I don't try for any master sets. Those people are dedicated and have deep pockets.

Thanks for all the answers guys.. I did know that building from scratch would be more expensive. I was wondering though if anyone had any guesstimates on how much more.
For example. I can grab a hand collated 2014 Topps base set 1-661 on Ebay right now for about $39.. thats price plus shipping. What would you guys estimate would cost to build from scratch to completion from buying packs/boxes.
Another example is 2014 Topps Heritage 1-425. $40 right now buy it now price. Would you estimate that would cost me double to build from scratch? triple? 10x?

I used to buy one
or two boxes of
each set, and then
try and hunt down
everything I was
missing. It's
worked OK, but my
uncompleted sets
far outnumber my
completed sets.
I've only completed
one that had
serially numbered
short prints in it,
2002-03 SP
Authentic (NBA).
The set is complete
here on the
Database too. That
was hard to do, and
I did it all
without an eBay
account or paypal.
It would probably
be easier now, but
I have less money
available now
because what I once
spent on cards now
has to go to
medicine. I don't
count variations
missing as being
incomplete, but for
me a complete set
would include all
the short prints.
That's one of the
many reasons I
prefer 1990s and
older, they really
didn't do that sort
of thing until 1998
or so. Not to say I
won't chase short
prints- I'll add
any card to my
collection if I
don't already have
it- but I just
don't need them to
be included for my
set to be complete.

I aim waay too high for boxes and packs... I heard once that the one person who had the most hockey cards, (no doubles,) in the world was Patrick Roy. I have an unrealistic dream of beating him someday. I haven't even broke 20k yet! Needless to say I go into my card guy's store, pick a set I wish to complete either at random or I've printed lists, and I get as close to complete as he can get me!! when you get to the point that packs are just leaving you doubles I get bored and upset. picking out a set of 400 from a 5000 count box? now that's FUN for me!!

Honestly, how much it would cost depends on the set. The more cards, the more it will cost you. For a 200 card set, It would probably take 2 or 3 boxes. I've bought 4 boxes of a 250 card set, and I still need like 3 cards! Just come up with a plan for your double or triples!

Cost to complete 1-661 Topps set - About $180-200.
Price to complete 1-425 Heritage set - $120-150
For regular Topps, one Hobby Jumbo box for each series did the trick (with some extras and some nice inserts). Each box should run anywhere from $90 to $100 (depending on your source).
For Heritage, we opened one box, came NOWHERE near completing the set - box cost around $60. Two boxes MIGHT have gotten us to a set, but maybe not. (I bought a hand-collated set on ebay for about $20!)
We don't go after SPs. If we get them, fine, if not, no biggie.
(I have plenty of extras of both if people need some to complete sets.)
