My phone froze as I was posting my reply last night. I won't bother to try and remember exactly what I said. The gist of it: Chuck is Right in saying "junk era" is a colloquialism used to describe a time period. Furthermore, if you don't think cards like 1990 Fleer baseball are JUNK, why don't you look it up in your Funk & Wagnall's? They are basically the definition of junk. You can like cards all you want, but junk is a word with a set definition, and it applies here.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Agreed. I begrudge nobody for liking the cards from that era. More power to them. I like some of them myself. I'm merely pointing out that they do fit the official definition of the word.

I agree that 1990 Fleer is junk, but I'll take it a step further and say that the entire brand is junk when you're talking baseball cards. I just don't see what that has to do with an era though, unless you consider Fleer's entire existence as a baseball card company as an era. Those are some of the most depressing looking cards I've ever seen in my life, regardless of the year. They should have renamed the brand "Suicide" instead. Yes, Fleer is the very definition of junk.

one thing I did like about fleer is that all regular cards for a team were together on the checklist...I like that when pulling team lots, since you only have to look at the end of the set for specials/checklists, and one other area for the regular cards, not the entire run

Hit the nail squarely on the head for me! Baseball was where I started and right around that time too. When I hear the term junk-wax, those are the years I think of specifically. Not b/c the cards were junk, but just the sheer quantity available then and still available now. I also include NFL cards for 89-93 with those MLB cards. I think NBA and hockey fall in line there too. NASCAR cannot be included in the early junk-wax era though, not until at least 1991.

I've gotta disagree Billy. A card from this era with major damage truly is total junk to me. I had to throw away over a dozen 1990 UD MLB cards a little over a week ago b/c they were stuck inside of old, cheap pages. I got them out, but there was so much surface loss and the holograms were destroyed. No one would want those cards now, even children.
If a card is in nice condition, then I agree that it is never junk. It doesn't matter who it is or how many are out there. Anything 1980 or older is never junk to me. I don't care how damaged it is for cards from those years.
