I'm not sure how the list of Hall of Famers by team is generated, but there are numerous erroneous entries. Looking at the Chicago Cubs and clicking on the list of Hall of Famers generated a list that included names like Tony Gwynn, Babe Ruth, Luis Aparicio and at least a dozen others that never had any connection to the Cubs. Here's a link to the page I speak of. Cubs HOF

This shows up because they have cards that the team TID is Chicago Cubs. Some are in error - Tony Gwynn is a sticker on the back of an Andre Dawson sticker back (or at least I assume it was but the back image has been removed), in one of the Babe Ruth cards, he is pictured with two other players and the second card is just wrongly linked (the set they come from was put out as a Chicago Cubs set so whoever loaded the checklist linked the mall to the Cubs). The Aparicio is a modern day memorabilia card but has no image but was obviously wrongly linked to the Cubs. Without the image, I can't tell what team it would be from.

I assumed the list must have been auto-generated in some fashion. The fact there are so many erroneous links pretty much makes the information garnered from it unuseable. I thought it might be a useful shortcut to some information, but I suppose we'll just have to get the info the old fahioned way.

I guessing there aren't as many errors as you suspect. For a quick example, Ozzie Smith is probably linked to the Cubs b/c of how many cards were put out of both him and Ryne Sandberg together. Although Ryno doesn't show up in my STL list of HOFers (for some odd reason), Cal Ripken does show up there for the same reason. There are lots of Ozzie/Cal cards that have been made throughout the years. Rickey Henderson also shows up in my STL list b/c of the cards he shares with Lou Brock.

There are a lot more than you think. Actually 16 by my count that have no connection to the Cubs and the Hall of Fame other than maybe sharing a card with a Cub somewhere. And I guess that's my issue with a list like this. I'm not sure what use it is to anyone. What would you be able to use this information for? It isn't a list of Cubs Hall of Famers, which is what I would think it was meant to be. It also doesn't include turn of the century players when the Cubs went by White Stockings, Colts and Orphans. I know tradingcarddb makes a distinction between those as different teams, but for the purposes of identifying Hall of Famers that were associated with the "Cubs" organization this distinction excludes another 7 HOFers that would normally be included with "Cubs" HOFers. Also excludes Tony Larussa (1 game with the Cubs 1973, never knew that until researching for this). This isn't a complaint as much as it is an observation. There is a vast amount of worthwhile information to be found here. These 16 just make no sense to me when I navigate to Cubs and then Hall of Famers.

Some of them don't have cards associated with the Cubs. My guess is they used to be associated but it was not fixed correctly. Alan Trammell was a bench coach for the Cubs, so he actually does have Cubs cards. I like to go through the "All Names" list of teams and try to fix them. This helps with fixing multiple PID's with the same name.

I would just like to add that this is a database. which is an agnostic mechanism for storing information. Reports can be generated filtering on any pieces of the information stored.
In this case, the report is asking for the names of pople who have been tagged as members of the HOF, with cards that have "Chicago Cubs" (actually the search is probably looking for cards with the Cubs TID) in the team. Because card companies liked making cards with more than one player on them, and team and player collectors want the players and teams associated with these cards, the query cannot discern that Cal Ripken is not the Cub player on a Ripken / Sandberg card.

The HOF report ignores all cards with multiple teams assigned to avoid this issue, so that's not the problem. It seems to be a combination of cards like the one C2 just posted and wrongly assigned teams and TIDs.

Ray Schalk was a Cubs coach; Bill Veeck refers to William Veeck Sr., the Cubs President, but was linked to his son.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.
