Ok so then what is the point in Admin using the JSY and MEM in the Level 4 tutorials ....... this is again why we need some solid clarification on this site. It is frustrating to do tons of work on here and have the possibility somebody coming along behind you and changing it regardless if it is JSY or MEM. I am not changing from what I feel I was taught on here and if it is a Jersey card I will be putting it as I think it is intended, JSY .... just as my previous post has stated.

I have no problem with thatm Ranford. I'll stick with MEM for stuff I enter, as most of the checklists I enter are wrestling, and they don't wear jerseys. There are so many things above and beyond jerseys that they put into cards these days. I think MEM would cover most of those. (We have cards with fur from champion racehorses in multiple sets, for crying out loud.) But I don't think anyone would begrudge you using JSY if it's specifically a jersey. My biggest issue is people putting the note as part of the player's name, so the card doesn't link to the player. (Stan Musial JSY as the name, and nothing in the note field) But I know you are thorough and accurate with your work, and would not do that. I think this might be an example of how much the hobby has changed since the site was founded. Jerseys used to satisfy collectors, but now the manufacturers have to keep looking for new things to keep collectors interested.
My favorite example of a memorabilia card is a "jersey" card of The Invisible Man, which is simply a card with nothing attached to the spot where the swatch should go. I thought that one was hilarious.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Looks like they did an autograph too. Can't find a picture of the relic card but I've seen it before and it was similar to this.

The ultimate MEM card I want is Danica Patrick's 2008 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit. And guess which part of that swimsuit I want on that card. Oh, I have such a filthy mind.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

Here's my two cents. Take it how you want to. I post EVERY memorabilia card as MEM in Note 1. There are too many types of memorabilia and variations of those to put the info for the actual piece in the main notes section. That extra info needs to be in the "Note 2" section. I have many examples of why I do this. #1 is that NFL/MLB/NBA (and maybe NHL too) make TONS of memorabilia cards now that are just "event-worn" items. That's a jersey or t-shirt that was worn only long enough for pictures to be taken by the card manufacturer and then the item was cut up into little pieces to be added to the cards. E-W MEM's are a big part of why I stopped buying hobby boxes from any of these sports. There is also the now more-common practice of saying the item is not from any specific game/season/event. I don't want any of this crap.
#2 - NASCAR cards feature about 20 different types of MEM in/on cards over the years. You can have up to four different types of MEM on the same card, and some cards feature 4 types but they are different depending on the version of card. You can have one card that contains a piece of any of these Race-Used items: Firesuit, Tire, Sheetmetal, Glove, Shoe, Undershirt, Sock, Helmet, Car Cover, Windshield, Piston Ring, and more! Then there are also cards with Corporate MEM cards. These are cards with a piece of MEM worn during a photo shoot before or after a race, such as hats and sponsor shirts (usually polo-type shirts). To keep it simple, all of these cards should be listed as just MEM in the 1st Note with a more accurate description in the 2nd Note. Many times, the title of the set tells you what MEM piece is in the card or you just know what level has what type of piece b/c you are a fan of the sport or set.
#3 - Manufactured Patches! Do I need to say more? I will though. These are LOGO and LETTER patches created by the card manufacturers (mostly Topps)! They look great but are completely NOT 'MEM' cards in my eyes. They are legal fakes of a memorabilia card.
After "EW/EU" cards, that is #2 for why I don't buy MLB/NFL boxes anymore. The #3 reason is that nearly all "hits" are of Rookies (actually Draft Picks) in either sport now. I don't want an EW card of some random 7th round NFL pick or MLB ANY-round pick that may never make a Top Level Roster, even if it is AU'd!!! There is so much junk in the market right now and it's being put out by the remaining major companies! It's not like Star & Classic are still around and there are no more "Broder" type cards being mass-produced right now.

C2, as I was reading this forum adn saw the reference to horse hair on a card, I was thinking about a Playboy or Penthouse set with similar memorabilia. You beat me to it.

And Spaz, I am with you on everything you said including why I don't chase these MEM cards. The only ones I have came in mass lot purchases.
Because the "MEM" card has evolved beyond just JSY cards, I think what Spaz has said on how to list them is the best way to go. Note 1 - MEM, Note 2 - e.g. JSY, Cap, Pants, Bat, Glove, and for C2, Bikini bottom. There are many MLB sets that have different MEM items in the same set adn of the same player. The site guidelines on this have been overtaken by the manufacturers seeking ways to get more money out of collectors. But it would be good if Admin updated the guidelines and put out a message to all members on the change.

I see your point all too well, yes NHL is a pathetic waste land of event worn junk etc, and I for one would like to know what the MEM is for sure ......... to me thats like asking a used car dealership what they have for sale and they say cars and leave it at that. MEM to me is non-specific and again we are to strive for accuracy and detail on the DB. Sadly if the execs at card companies make it more difficult then it becomes more difficult. The DB must evolve so that we the contributers can easily add this information so that it is a clear for the visitor / user as possible. I do not have any issue what so ever with doing it as Spaz has described and would start doing so but only if it is deemed the proper way that it is to be done so by the ones who make the final decisions here at the DB. That is the reason I do it as I do, it is shown in the Permissions quiz in such a way that I simply follow that. But again I agree that the MEM thing should be done in such as way as it is simple as possible to expalin each card. To some this is WAY too much, for some it is the right thing to do. As such it is Admin to make the rules and for us to follow.

Of course, you all had to know I was going to jump in here - we're talking Glossary entries! :)
I LOVE the idea of Note1 field being populated with MEM, and the Note2 field specifying the MEM in/on the card. (I was recently updating some sets that was Quad mem cards - I actually skipped the ones that had "J-BG-FG-B" and the like. I can guess that those letters mean it was a jersey, batting glove, fielding glove, and a bat, but it seemed like each card was in fact different. So many entries in the glossary. Having them all be MEM in Note field - and one entry in the Glossary - and then specifying the 4 types in the Note2 field - which is meant for the longer descriptions - seems to be ideal.)
C2C - ANY of those cards in that SI set would be very nice to have. <ahem>
RE: Event Worn and Manufactured Patches (for the most part) - Big yawn. (However, I did REALLY like what Topps did a couple years back with the Silver Slugger Award cards. I went out and bought 12 of them. They aren't menu-patches, but they are still considered "relics" as far as "box hits" go - and I'm not a fan of that.)
Anyway, let's see if we can get @Admin to respond here and see if he/she/they agree that we should list all in Note as MEM and specify (if possible) in Note2.
