shouldn't this set be called fleer tradition instead of just fleer?

I would think so, but I don't know basketball too well.

I am glad this was brought up. I had the same thought as well. 98-99 was the first year where these were known as Fleer Tradition as opposed to Fleer. 

For major release set name issues, best bet is to click on the report inaccuracies link or private message Admin directly.

 Is this the same type of issue we discussed ad nausem with Fleer Ultra?

No - this one is different. This is a product typically called "Fleer Tradition" (it's in baseball, too) but in this case, in basketball, it's being called simply "Fleer". This would be like calling the Ultra product (in it's infancy) "Fleer".

From what I understand, Fleer stopped making its generic Fleer base sets around this time. Instead, the generic flagship set became known as Fleer Tradition. I'm no expert on the matter but I have noticed that some of these early "Fleer Tradition" sets are commonly referred to as just Fleer within the hobby. I'm not expressing an opinion on what they should be called. Just noting what I have seen.

You are correct. The Flagship Fleer was renamed Fleer Tradition in 1998-99, it would retain the name until the final Fleer owned release in 2004-05, with the exception of 2001-02 when it was called Fleer Platinum to celebrate the anniversary of 1961-62 Fleer.
