I need a good photo program. I used to use the one that came with windows. It would automatically straighten the card scans and allow for easier cropping. Unfortunately it's been crashing a lot now.

I really like GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program). There are versions for Windows, OSX and Linux. And it's free. But It may be too powerful for most here.

When I started uploading card scans, I used the article that Billy wrote. He has the scan settings for darkness and contrast listed. They have worked perfect for 90% of the cards. Refractors and foils are a whole different type of headache for me. I have used it to erase various marks and irregularities on cards, but have had to play around with it at certain times. Truly though, Billy's article is about the best quick start guide I have read.

Bob -- the bottom of each of Billy's posts has a link to an article about how to scan using Photoscape. Check out http://cardboardhistory.blogspot.com/p/how-to-make-your-scans-look-like-cards.html.
I recently starting scanning images and this article got me up an going really fast.

I finally took the plunge to download photoscape. I have been using windows old "photo editor" that originally came in the Office Suite circa 2000 and was discontinued with Office 2003 or something. My main motivation for switching to photoscape is the capability of "rotating" photos. Often when I scan cards (espeically the chrome and slick shiny cards that spin on my scanner's glass) I have cards that don't cooperate and are not aligned at exactly at right angles. I also want to use some of the image effects that my copy of photo editor stopped allowing access to for some odd reason. I think an update to the newer Office software deleted those options (things like filters to make the image look like a pencil drawing, stained-glass, gray scale)

If anyone wants a more powerful photo editor for free, I suggest Adobe Photoshop. An older version of the full program (CS2) is availbable for free. http://www.techspot.com/downloads/3689-adobe-photoshop-cs2.html. Serial numbers are listed on the download page.

~Rob~ Hockey set collector including inserts, ERR, COR, VAR. Knowledgeable about 1968-69 to 1994-95 hockey. All 1990 and newer cards for trade are NRMT. Expect the same in return. 1989 and older are assigned a grade. Everything on my trade list is available for sale. Reasonable prices based on condition. If it's not on my tradelist, it's not available.

Yes - then you are doing it right if it takes a long time. I know, I'm not a fan of scanning, straightening, cropping, & adding either. Well, actually, I do like the adding part, but the rest of it, yuck! But doesn't it make you appreciate it so much more when you see the nice clean scans that are added to the site?
