There is instruction in the FAQ that refutes the notion that only the card subject's name should go in the card's name field
From "edit name links": (emphasis mine)
"Example 2 (independent of display name):
In this example, we will assume that the card has a description that doesn't name individual people, for example, "The Bure Brothers" or "The Early Years". You could rename the card and include the names that need to be linked, like "The Bure Brothers (Pavel Bure / Valeri Bure), "The Early Years (Lou Gehrig / Babe Ruth)" ...."
Note that this example does not suggest removing the actual caption text of the card from the name field.

A very recent example of something rather similar:
The Tennis sets from the 1920s has names like W.X. Kingsley or Mrs. S.T. Smith when their names they went by were Billy Kingsley (sorry pal to use your name as an example) and Jen Smith (made up). I consulted with Admin before attacking those sets but after seeing photos of the actual cards (front and back). The reply I got was: "In this case, it's probably best to mimic what is printed on the cards since some people may not know the real names and might just be going with what's on the cards." I totally agree with this. If I come across a card like "The Bure Brothers", if I didn't know hockey (but I do), I may not know Pavel and Valeri. (If it was basketball, I wouldn't know most players.) Granted, there are plenty of other ways to track down a card, but having the actual verbiage that appears on the card in the "Name" field should be a given. (BTW, that was a real pain adding those PIDs. To get them to link right away, I had to change the name to the name they went by - so it would go into the database the "right" way. Then replace the name with what was there before (copy / paste!). That would remove the PID, so then I had to put the PID back in. And since I was already doing a ton of research to find these players playing names, I went ahead and put in the vitals on the PID page. About 10 minutes per player. But I'm so happy it's done.)

The examples you give are for multi-person cards, Tom. The ones I referenced are single subeject cards which had a description included, possibly some of the back text.
Another example is some of the auto/relic sets where there are two variations (both numbered 1/1) and the note 2 field should tell you which sponsor version it is. Instead that was included in the name field (should be Note2) and some of them had SP tags as welll,,,all 1 of 1s are SP, and by nature one sponsor could not be rarer than the other.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards. I think I can officially announce that I'm done with the 2005 Donruss sets! Man some of those sets had over 200 insert sets. I can't guarantee I didn't miss something, but I've gone through just about everything and added missing card prefixes, added missing notations, cleaned up checklists that had notations in the name, added all missing teams and verified, and the only checklist list missing is for the 2005 Donruss Signature Recollection Buy Back autos, couldn't find one for it. Now onto Fleer!

That was a humungous undertaking. Wow - I think I can speak on behalf of everyone who uses (or will use) this site - THANKS!
That was a lot of sets! I remember when they were still in the Glossary Missing definitions and the 2005 Donruss covered 4 or 5 pages (100 sets/page). Nice job!

2005 Playoff Absolute Memorabilia - FYI
I'm currently working through this checklist. It's another great Donruss product with hundreds of insert sets and parallels of inserts sets. There are a few checklists that still need teams added, but I just finished added all the teams to the Tools of the Trade inserts and updated card prefixes and notes. If you don't know the product Tools of the Trade as Autograph versions and relic version with multiple numbered of relics, from one to six and parallels of all of those. I'm also planning on slowly cleaning up the checklists as they are all pretty much a mess with relic notes in with the player names. I've decided to just add the general MEM to the card notes and I'm moving all the relic type notes to Note2. This is mainly because Note has a limited number of characters allowed and with some of the multiple relics you can't fit them all. I'm hoping this week I'll have all the insert teams finished and then it's just working on cleaning up checklists.

Seems to be the general concensus among the membership here that MEM is good in the Note field, especially when the Note2 field is used to be more descriptive of the MEM piece(s).
