The site awards for 2017 are coming in January 2018. Members will get to vote for winners in a bevy of categories and others will be selected based on contributions to the site. January 2018 will also mark the 10th year anniversary of the site. As a countdown and retrospective, each month we’ll review the stats and present the awards as they would have gone down (minus the categories based on features that weren’t available yet or the ones that require member voting). Last month, we looked at 2011. This month, we look back at 2012.
2012 – A Look Back
2012 was the year where some of the site’s most popular features were added. With the addition of the messaging system and the forum, members could now communicate with one another. Other new features included Lists, the Transaction Manager, and Rip a Pack. New categories added included Non-Sport, Tennis, and Football (AUS), a short-lived category for Australian Football and Rugby, before the “Misc Sports” category existed. Other new areas added included Recently Collected, Top Searches, and Card Companies.
Here’s a screenshot of what the site looked like in November of 2012 courtesy of the Wayback Machine:

Awesome! Coming up on my 5 year anniversary of being a member in October. Finding this site and really using it, turned out to be a very important day in my life...it got me back into collecting the NBA, which I didn't really get back into full time until November 2012...it led to me starting Cardboard History in 2014...and that doesn't even take into account the friends I've made here. I'm truly surprised to see that I led several categories already, being that my first month was mostly inputting my collection. I still remember the first checklist I ever posted, 1992-93 Upper Deck 15,000 point club. I didn't get to upload any of the scans thought, and I have all but one of the cards.
I know I can be kind of a jerk sometimes but I truly do love the sight and I'm thrilled to be a part of it every day.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards. Cardboard History My COMC New Collection Website: Cardboard History Gallery (Still under construction) Tips on how to make your scans look like the card does in hand (No more washed out, fuzzy scans!):

This was the year that I discovered this wonderful site and as you can tell, the site I visit the most. I have a passion for collecting and finding this site just amped up my passion for the hobby.
Also Billy, I don't think anyone thinks you are a jerk any of the time. I have never met you but I feel like I know you. You are always very caring and helpful to everyone on this site and it has a pleasure getting to "know you". Thanks Billy!

That's the biggest thing I've noticed about this site - people are helpful and not full of themselves. They accept people for whatever/whoever/however they collect, and just love the hobby. It's not always about the biggest dollar item or hardest-to-find cards.

~Aaron~ Please check "My Finnish Flash Collection" to see which cards I am looking for with my PC - willing to trade or buy anything I need. 2,174 unique Teemu cards....and counting (Last updated 22 April 2024) 828+ different Brett cards....and counting

I have to agree with you on Billy, never met the man but feel like I know him also. I visit his blog atleast weekly to see what is going on and he always has something to say here.

Trying to acquire one card for every for every set, insert, parralle, minor, euro, team issue, oddball etc sets produced for Hockey. Been an interesting project.

Wow, congrats on all the awards winners. Can not believe we only had 300,000 scans on the site 5 years ago. Now we are closing in on 2 mil. It is because of every member here. We are passionate about collecting and making this site a better place.

I echo everyone's sentiments on Billy! I have never met you in person Billy, but you seem like a genuine caring person who always contributes so much thought, insight, and opinion without alienating or downplaying anyone. It is definitely a skill and something to be proud of and you along with some of who I would call the "major players" on the site are a huge part of why it is so enjoying to be on the site multiple times per day.
As for the awards, it seems like 2012 was the year the site stepped it up to another level. The screen shot looks much more like today's site than any of the other posts. I wish I found the site then, I would have a collection from 2012-2015! I love being fully back into collecting and am loving it more than when I was a kid BECAUSE of this site. Tradingcarddb is not just a website or tool, it is an asset that makes the hobby better!

Well I agree Billy you are a jerk!!!! Lol, just kidding. I think people get confused sometimes. They equate "jerk" with being honest. I absolutley love this site as well. About a half a year ago I had a breakdown and took some time off. I realized I was treating what is supposed to be a stress relieving hobby to have fun with into a stressed filled obsession. It felt like a second job almost!! Came back after my 6 month hiatus with a different attitude, HAVE FUN. Boy, has it ever been.
Thanks to all the major players (you know who you are) whom have worked hard to make this site what it is, and continue to make it better for the future.
Jason

Thanks guys, I am not sure how to respond, you are going to make my head swell up to match the rest of my body, LOL
the group on here is great...I have not met anyone in person from here yet, even though Dan lives maybe 20 minutes away from me, it just hasn't worked out schedule wise...I am hoping to meet C2Cigars next month, the window of time is going to be pretty small but will try to force time in.
One thing I somehow forgot to mention, if it was not for the Database I would never have become a hockey fan...don't know how that managed to slip my mind, because I'm spending all day doing a project with my hockey cards, watching an old Nordiques-Bruins game on NHL Network, (my first Nordiques game) and had the channel on while I made my original post. It's become such an integral part of my life in such a short time it's hard to think of a time when it wasn't, I suppose!
