So stay with me on this: compared to what's in the database, the front has the airbrushing like O-Pee-Chee and the back like the Topps. Or....was there little standard of uniformity in the airbrush technique?

Just an inking issue. Notice the sky, hat & brim, face and shaded area, team, name.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

Sure. My thing was the amount of airbrush on the cap between the two.

If you look closely, the "airbrushing" is there but didn't get the full black inking.

Right. So my question is, is does the difference in the airbrushing on the cap mean anything in regards to variations?

As Chuck has already stated 2 times, there is NO difference in the airbrushing - the difference is in the ink, and possibly even "fade" due to environment and time.

I'm seriously the only one who sees a difference in the amount of black on the cap? And the red stripe from the Senators uniform?

Yes, that's our point. The amount of ink that was applied by the printing plate(s). If it had received the black the red would have been covered. That's a printing glitch not a VAR.

Ok. Now you're saying something that's teaching me how they used to do it. Thank you.
For the sake of discussion, on the infamous Bill Ripken 89 Fleer, the black box vs. black blob is intentional then?

Yes, but they didn't create a new plate. They just tried altering the black plate numerous times, scribble, blob, box
FYI, printing plates are a single, full 132-card size metal sheet. After printing is completed the sheet is cut into individual card size if they are going to be used as inserts.
