I got about 1 and a half, and they still canceled school.

People raised hell around here about schools not closing for about that same amount of snow a couple of weeks ago! But the schools weren't actually expecting it that time. This time they knew for sure and were cancelling school for today after school ended yesterday!

They waited until last minute. Delayed at 5am, closed at 7:30. They’ve been paranoid about closures since we got 4 inches, they didn’t delay or cancel, and half the buses broke down.

From my observations, it seems the birds wait out the snow. I think the only time they come out is if they are starving but for the most part they just wait it out somewhere. Same with the squirrels here.

In my area, they got fussed at for not closing early when the snow started mid-afternoon. Several wrecks happened b/c of that, including a few buses. That snow was never expected to make it to the ground though. At my house, it didn't snow at all that day, but a few miles east got about 2 inches. When I left for work at 6:30pm that evening, the roads were dry here. It was less than 10 minutes before I was driving in snow and it continued to get worse the closer I got to work. There were cars spun out everywhere! AND I took the main roads in the city. Knowing this snow was coming overnight and continuing throughout the day made it an easy call to cancel schools in the area. I drive by SIX schools on my way to work most days, 2 each of Elementary, Middle and High School. One of each is b/t 6 and 8 miles from here and the other three are about 12 miles away (work is 16.2 miles from home).

I've also noticed that they wait it out while it's falling, but they usually come out when it stops. They are just like my dog: "I'll play in the snow when it stops falling on my head"!

Needless to say schools up here RARELY close, buses do not run if it drops to -40C with windchill but that is a liability issue not one of saftey per say. But that is in Saskatchewan, if anyone has ever looked where I live, Lloydminster is Canada's only border city. Half is in SK and the other half is in Alberta. The answer to all of your questions is yes we have two of everything ..... well almost. LOL Anyhoo, in SK the buses are governmnet run but in AB they are privately run so they only stop running when the driver/owner decides to not run where as the decision in SK is a "office" decision. Silly I know, lots of silliness in our city. As for the schools they will be open if the teachers can get there, blizzards don't stop em!!

My friend flew home from Atlanta today, and he said the whole airport was in a panic over a dusting of snow.
I think we will get warm enough to start melting ours Sunday. It was -2F when I got to work today.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

No lie, this is what got school cancelled in Nashville last Friday.
Then MLK holiday on Monday and a legit 3" on Tuesday (can't possibly open schools on Wednesday when there was snow the day before!!!!) means it's been a week since my kids have been to daycare. Needless to say, I'm really looking forward to getting back to normal tomorrow.

The last 3 posts are kind of everywhere, so I'll just stick to what I know.
Ranfan, that sounds crazy with the split in services! In the US (or at least in NC) the buses are owned by the school system and the drivers are also paid by the school system. The DOT (Department of Transportation) in each state is responsible for road maintenence and that includes treating and/or clearing the roads for winter weather. DOT did a good job treating the roads before the storm this time, but the amount of snowfall exceeds the number of trucks and plows that they have to deal with this much snow. I'm pretty sure the farmers that live around me will be working a lot on Thursday (for free) to clear the roads out here. If it wasn't for the farmers in the rural areas of NC, no one would get anywhere for days after a snow like this! I still don't know why our state isn't more prepared for this type of winter weather. It happens every 2-4 years. I'm sure this type of system happens every couple of weeks up there where you are during the winter, but the cold here doesn't usually mean snow/ice at the same time. Our power companies spend the whole summer trimming trees and branches away from power lines just anticipating ice!
David, have you seen some of the videos coming out of Atlanta? Not only is it the busiest airport in the world (I still don't know when it passed Chicago's O'Hare AP), but as a Delta hub, a little bit of frozen weather there creates havoc. They don't have the resources in ATL to deal with snow. I saw footage of a guy trying to drive a plane-ladder vehicle onto the runway and he was sliding all over the place. The Weather Channel was all freaked out about the weather b/c they are based in ATL, but I barely saw them cover anything outside of the ATL metro area! The only coverage they provided outside of central GA was purely from the radar. I'm glad I know how to read a radar scan and deduce what it means b/c they really tanked on this storm. I'm also glad that I have some really good meteorologists in my area. TWC was useless for this system, but my local weather forecasters were pretty damn good.
Hawkeye, that LOOKS icy to me! If it's just your driveway creating the effect, then it's not really snow or ice. The grass is perfectly green! Wait, how the hell does that happen? The grass is green and lush with no snow, but the driveway and the rooftops of all your neighbors have snow on them!?
In NC, if the grass doesn't start turning white or disappearing under white, there's not much of a problem.
