I completely agree with your question. BUT, why did the Saints even chase him? They didn't need him and they weren't going to make him the starter anyway. He probably wouldn't have been the #2 RB either. AP would've have been better off going to Dallas to fill in for Elliott while he's dealing with his legal issues. I guess Jerry Jones thought he could buy his way out of that suspension instead of buying an RB to fill in for Zeke for a while.
There had to be many more teams interested in AP. He was either chasing the paycheck and/or avoiding the non-playoff teams where he would have been a starter. I know he really wants a ring, but he needs to realize that he's to old, slow and often-injured now to get that as the starting RB or for a team that can spend a bunch of money on him for one year. The worst positions to play after age 30 are RB and CB! If you can't run as fast or faster than the guys in front of you, you don't hold much value for any team. WR and LB would be the next 2 positions in that line.
Sometimes you don't even have to be close to that age to get dumped or traded! I am still shocked that the Panthers traded Kelvin Benjamin to the Bills for a 3rd & 7th Round DP next year. That's shocking b/c KBen was a 1st Rd. DP in 2014!!! Apparently KBen is just too slow when compared to Funchess though (who was also drafted by the Panthers in 2014). Kelvin missed the whole 2015 season (when the Panthers went to the SB). Funchess wasn't too good that year, but was consistent and stayed that way in 2016. He's been really good this year though. DFun is more aggressive and faster than Benjamin. It just took him a bit longer to develop into a good WR. If Ted Ginn Jr. wasn't so wishy-washy and chasing $-signs, the Panthers would still have KBen. With Ginn bouncing after the dollars AGAIN, the Panthers still need speedy receivers to stretch the field. Curtis Samuel (their 2017 DP @ WR) helps give them the speed and their acquisitions on both sides of the ball should help the Panthers be better overall. Benjamin was just clogging up the offense instead of helping it!
Sorry that I got side-tracked on this topic, but it helps illustrate my point! AP is done in the NFL, UNLESS he puts his ego aside and decides to be a teacher instead of demanding to be the leader. He can "coach" a young RB into being the best RB in the game right now! He can still fill-in for a starter due to injury or sickness and be very effective, but he needs to assume a leadership role for any team he is on. He doesn't seem like he wants to do that though.
