I know who they are and any big NFL fan should know too. However, the site doesn't know and there are many incorrect name-links for these two players.
I am talking about the Steve Smith WR that was drafted by the Panthers in 2001 out of the University of Utah who was born in CA and the Steve Smith WR drafted by the Giants in 2007 out of the University of Southern California who was born in Alaska.
I need some help getting these all linked to the correct Steve Smith! This is why I waited SO long to add my Steve Smith PANTHERS collection on here. I knew this would be a problem and it's become a big one. Not only are cards mixed b/t the two, but there was also ANOTHER PID for the NYG Smith. I linked the cards listed under his PID of 93188 to his original PID of 45822. The Smith from 2001 Panthers has the PID # of 12801.
Can anyone help me work on these? There are just SO MANY and I can only go by what I have right now. I have about 200 cards in my Steve Smith Panthers collection, so there's a lot missing. Anything after 2000 and before 2007 should be linked to #12801. The 2007 cards are mostly easy to separate b/c it was the PID45822 Smith's RC year. There are also 2 MORE Steve Smith NFL players, but they played long before these two and at different positions (OT & TE).
I really hope I can get some help here b/c it is just too much for only me!

I'll help a little here. But if there aren't scans, or other indicators (like RC designation of a 2007 card, or a card that obviously fits the younger Steve's team) I won't know which Steve is in question. I won't move anything unless I know for sure; I don't want to make matters worse. I have done about 10 already.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Thanks David! I have the same issue. MOST of these cards don't have scans, team links, SN's, RC designations, etc. This is so complicated. I can only fix the ones I know for sure right now!

I gave up after about 20 or 30. If there were any I was sure of, I also checked card numbers in the parallel sets, so I got those too if it was a match. There were some that were clearly some sort of Giants team card, so I got those, and one was actually a veteran+rookie card with both Steve Smiths, so I linked it to both. I'm going to bed now.

Thanks David! I did at least 50 more of these tonight after the thread-post and I'm off to bed soon too. Unfortunately, it DRASTICALLY slowed my progress in adding my Steve Smith - Panthers cards to my Collection here on TCDB. I hope there are some Giants fans (or some team collectors for the other teams the USC WR played for) that can help us get these right.

I can offer this help for now:
If you look up the set on beckett's web site (use online price guide - you'll get all the card info except pricing for free), many times the card listings will show the team (and sometimes the stock photo). It may not answer ALL of the questions, but it may get you closer to getting them all done.

It's a problem inherent with the database programming. Programming can only match text strings. It can't decide for itself which Steve Smith is which. I assume it just picks the first Steve Smith PID it hits upon.
I don't see an easy solution. One possibility is to not create name links if there are multiple PIDs with the same name. Force the checklist uploader to manually check the name/PID and pick the correct one.
-------------------------------
Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

I've always felt that was a good idea. Even if we got these 100% accurate, and had the USC Smith not retired, it would have happened again with the 2016 sets. If the multi-named players just threw those sets into the name validation system, somebody could go through and choose the right name manually from the start. This is an instance where the Alias feature is very good too. If the cards were uploaded as Steve Smith Sr. And Steve Smith USC, they would go to the right place.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I do know how to fix all of them, but there are so many cards that it's really overwhelming. I have complete access to Beckett's checklists and that will help, but I just don't have the time to do all of it. Just looking for some help here from other collectors of the 2 players.
David: Steve Smith Sr. was not known as Senior until his son was born b/t the 2014 and 2015 seasons. On a releated note, Thomas Davis, an LB for the Panthers was also never known as Sr. until the 2015 season. Their cards will not list them as Sr. unless they demand it in their card contracts.
