1986 Fleer Baseball Forum

Can someone confirm positively that these were the stickers included in the 1986 Fleer packs?  I ask this because the same set of 22 Famous Feats is also entered as 1980 (my references show 1980 - the cards have no copyright date).  The 1986 is probably right as Fleer really only started big in 1981 and it would continue the trend from 1982 onwards. Either way, once confirmed, one of the sets should be deleted.

As well, this set's checklist as it is listed is not ideal.  There is no way to know if all front / back variations will ever be listed unless we prove that every front also comes with every back.  I for one have 4 variations not in this list.

For me this is really three (or two) sets.  The Famous Feats back is one set of 22 cards; the team logos are another set; and the team pennants is the third set (these last two can be combined into one set if one prefers).

1986 Fleer packs did contain stickers with "Famous Feats" on the reverse.

Fleer did produce baseball stickers well before their foray into the actual cards in 1981 (Topps kept them out until then).

Fleer could have produced a famous feats sticker set in 1980, but because it wasn't actual cards, I didn't care at the time, so I don't know definitively. This may not be a duplication.

As for the stickers being one set and the backs being another, that's actually a very good suggestion, as this would help simplify some of the later Topps sticker sets that had players on the backing (and were numbered differently). I am curious to see what our vocal minority on here has to say. (We have how many members and only about 15 of us post regularly?)

Oh boy....

Fleer produced the original Famous Feats in 1972, again in 1980....just stickers no cards. They are both listed in our database as "Famous Feats".

In 1986 Fleer brought them back as Team Stickers with the '86 set [listed under Insert & Related sets]. Both the logos and pennants were issued. Because of the number of teams vs. famous feats, some team logo/pennant stickers had multi famous feats.....we list 93...so somebody did a good job entering the variations. I didn't check them for accuracy vs. my spreadsheet.....but I do believe a few are missing and/or incorrect.

If anybody wants a full rundown on these lmk. I will try and check out the database for accuracy.

Shouldn't the numbering be 1 to 22 with whatever team variation instead of NNO?

I remember suggesting a few of the variations, at least the ones in my collection do exist.

Another good point....IF and WHEN  I get to look at the 1986 Team Stickers----How would you guys want them categorized?

• #s 1-22 with different teams and variations
• leave as is with teams and #s 1-22 as variations
• also remember there are a few additional variations ex. Phillies

That checklist is a royal mess. That's what happens when you mix numbered backs (Feats cards) with sticker fronts. The crazy mix (variations) comes about because of the printing process. The backs are produced in sheets. Then those sheets are feed into the machine to have the sticker fronts applied. There is (was) no consideration taken as to what sticker front got applied to what card back. Unlike a players card, where care is taken to get the fronts and backs correctly matched, the sticker backs (Feats cards) were just treated as blank stock for the stickers. Unless you know the exact sheet layouts for both the fronts and backs, you'll never know the exact number of combinations. In this case, there's a theoretical maximum of 968 combinations.

This is not the only instance. Topps football and baseball stickers have the same mess. Every Topps football and baseball sticker I have from the 1980s, is a different front/back combo than what is listed in this database. And personally, worrying about every possible combination possible is above and beyond OCD. I'd much rather see this database treat each front and back as separate entities. Since stickers were intended to be removed and separated from the backs, treat them as such. It would be must easier to track what you have in your collection.

A great online resourse for all things Fleer is the the "Fleer Sticker Project" Blog (http://fleersticker.blogspot.com/) Here is a post about this set over there: http://fleersticker.blogspot.com/2009/03/1986-fleer-baseball-stickers.html It sort of clears up some things. Nothing too definate but might help in the long run.

I know Im a late arrival to this convo but nonetheless baffled as well as I tryt to organize and enter my collection into the data base.    In reviewing the Fleer Sticker project blog listed in another entry, it indicated that: "....all the stickers were double printed (with some stickers being triple printed), every sticker can be found with at least 2 different backs and in some cases 3 different backs."   This seems to indicate a potential finate set and contradicts what you indicated???  Now I am more confused LOL.

Anyway I only collect St Louis Cardinals cards (and anything else Cardinals wise listed in this database) so cannot confirm with 100 percent certaintly BUT I have multiple of the pennant design and of the helement design and they consistantly have the same combos of "Famous Feats" on them.

i.e.

NNO Logo / Lloyd Waner (famous feat)

NNO Logo / Jack Chesbro (famous feat)

NNO Logo / Grover Cleveland Alexander (famous feat)

NNO Pennant / Oeschger & Cadre (famous feat)

NNO Pennant / Cy Young (famous feat)

SO.... it would be a crazy coincidence and remarkable odds to have multiple of each of these combos if they were printed willy nilly.

Likewise I do have maybe 70 other stickers from other teams that seemingly have a consisntent pattern as well.  I did not purchase these as a set or trade fro them as a set but accumulated them over the klast few years.  

That being said Im not sure of the best direction of the database.  Originally I would say make the "team stickers a "related set" and and the "famous feats" a "related set".  However I am not so sure any more and leaning towards making them ONE "related set" as they appear to be finite.

SO am I opening up a can of worms LOL

Chuck and I had suggested going down the path of "2 sets" (stickers as one set, backs as another set) for the crazy 1988-1990 Topps baseball stickers and Admin flat out said that they were NOT in agreement with that method. We should go the route of listing the differnt ones that are KNOWN to exist (like PartagasX notes). Let's not create phantom stickers, but know that other combos can be added at any time.

Question about the Famous Feats backs: should they be listed also as a separate insert set for those that have the sticker removed and are just left with the Famous Feats backs? I have several like these, and there is currenlty not a means to list them without the sticker still on the front. A parallel would be the Topps Stickers - Super Star Backs.
