On the card backs, do the letter designations refer to the printing sheets?  Also, any idea what the asterisks stand for (if they stand for anything)?  

Yes, the letters A-F refer to the sheets each card was a part of.

I believe the asteriks were given to desginate if the sheets were single-or double printed (132 vs 264 cards).
