1990 Fleer Baseball Forum

As discussed in the linked thread below, an effort has been undertaken to verify the PRINTED IN U.S.A. "dot (U.S.A.)" / "no dot (U.S.A)" variations of this set. The variation is for the dot after the A in USA. I'm creating this new forum thread to specifically call out this effort instead of it being buried in a different, but related thread. The other link provided is the current spreadsheet in use to track this effort. I am kindly requesting assistance from those that "care" (I know how many people feel about this....) in making a final push on verification. If you do verify the existence of a "no dot" VAR I ask that you add it to the sheet as well as identifying yourself as the verifier (so that if any questions arise we can reach out).

I'm glad to see more have been added. I just made a purchase which is supposed to have over 400 more cards without the period. Hopefully this is true. I should be getting them within a week. I'll let you know how it goes. Hopefully we can pretty much verify this entire set and get them added to the database. I'm wondering how many of these Fleer years have the missing period. I was looking at my 1992 just now and it looks like I have many of them. Of course they are documented, but I'm going to look through the database here to see if any are not listed that I may come across.

I just added 14 more in courtesy of zephan12. He sent me a message the other day that I am just now getting to. He said that he had gone through several thousands of cards and those were the only other ones he found that weren't previously identified.

Do you have an idea on where these are found? I'm doubting wax packs, but still wondering about cell or rack.

I'm correcting myself again. The cards I'm getting are unknown as to what type of packs they came in. The guy with the wax box had periods. I asked many people about their listings and I got a bit confused. So, the question still remains, is the no period from rack or cello?

I'm correcting myself again. I don't think I'm getting over 400 cards. The guy's description was weird. Looks more like 66 cards. But there is a Griffey in there, which is definitely one I need. A bit disappointing if this is true. :(

I'd guess the no dot versions were in the 43 card mylar packs.  The "Ripkin" error was exclusive to these packs and the one shown on this site has the "U.S.A" back.  I seem to recall there were some other formatting issues (possibly different text wraps on the did you know blurbs) on these since Fleer used a different printer for those packs.   I'd imagine that all 660 cards are available with no dot.  Don't know if this helps the case or hurts it but the Soaring Stars inserts were exclusive to these packs and it appears that all are available with dot or no dot.

I have updated  the sheet with about 70 confirmed "no dot" Most, if not all of my cards are of this type.

I'm glad this is coming together. A couple of notations, some of which may have been covered in my other thread when we started talking about this.

#37 Greg Maddux has an x for the no dot version but no user id. Can anyone confirm this at this time?

#175 Mike Devereaux: I think the eror is only a dot version and the corrected is only a no dot version.

#353 Dave Martinez error: I think there is only a dot version.

#587 Mark Lemke: I think all the "dot" versions have been cut off so there isn't a copy of this. I think there are only no dot versions where the USA is fully printed.

#660 Checklist: This will be a toss up as to whether there should be at least one of them has a no dot. I'm thinking only 1 version of these has a no dot and the other doesn't.

Anyway, that's my opinion. I guess if we wait a little longer we'll see. But how do go about getting approval for them for the database? I'm not sure if my scanner would work with my new computer (I haven't tried it), so if anyone has the cards I've listed as existing and would scan them for the database, that would help me. Or maybe I can use my wife's phone.

I havea question for the person who updated 587 Mark Lemke. To date it had seems that all vresions of this card was the cut-off version where U.S.A. was "sliced". Someone updated it to say "No Dot" which assumes that a full U.S.A version was seen, not cut-off. Is this true? If all cards are sliced off it isn't a "dot" or "no dot" version, but rather its own beast.
