1991 Topps Baseball Forum

My 91 donruss is sorted into all 3 variations and almost complete. My next task is this troublesome 91 Topps set. First between what I have (dark vs. light logo variations) but would love to know if the glowbacks can have that parallel being spoke of before thinking I'm done with this set and put back into boxes again. I understand some don't give a RA but must appreciate the dedication that some do to chase such a task.

wow you guys! when i've had time i went through about 3K cards looking for the dark logos and errors and now i was looking to see peoples want lists to see about getting trades ready and now i find there are GLOWING cards AHHHH! this is crazy, who even thought of using a black light to see if there was a difference? Back to the drawing board with the cards and now i'll have to go through my sets to make sure i have them. The wife is going to smack me once i tell her about this and that i need the light, ha. no rest for the wicked!

No Ray, try to resist going to the dark side..just kidding..collect what you like. No chasing glow banks for me, but to each his own...

Even though we'll probably never list the glowbacks here (no verification that ALL cards had that VAR and no way for scans to show the difference), I sorted all my versions many months ago and keep will keep them seperate from each other. I also marked all the glowbacks in my collection on here.

I guess a Canadian verifying that ALL cards exist in both versions is not good enough for you. After all, what would we know.

I guess I missed that somewhere in this thread. That means there really is NO reason not to list them. Yeah, scans won't show the difference, but neither do retail parallels where the only difference is the thickness of the cards.

HA! Dark side for me! but still don't have the black  yet. yeah, i am totally one of those collectors that if i have a shot at the set, i will try and complete it. Just means hours apon hours of sorting again 

I'm kind-of a hoarder, so I still had my blacklight from High School in the early-mid 90's. Who knew it would be useful for determining the cards I owned from even earlier, but 20+ years later?!

If you really want to go after the set(s), I have thousands of them sitting here and sorted correctly! Oddly, the regular Dark Logo backs seem to be in the minority of my collection. I have a bunch of the regular base and base glowbacks and a bunch of the Dark Logo glowbacks. But the regular Dark Logo backs are in much lower supply in my collection of cards. I am not currently accepting trades, but plan to get back to doing that real soon. LMK if you want to chase more of the 1991 Topps MLB cards.

Finally sorting my 1991 Topps!    Purchased a Black light today and put it in the lamp - wow amazing how much the glowbacks glow!!!  I, glad the differences are real obvious after the strain the 1987-1991 Donruss variations put on my poor eyeballs.

I cant imagine the amount of time for those set collectors that all varieties.  As a team collector this has taken enough (too much lol) of my time.

Anyway, a couple observations.  

1. As I read in a previous post - there are glowbacks and non-glowbacks for each base card.

2. Likewise there are glow and non-glow backs for the "Dark 40th Anniversary Water mark" (partial) Parallel set.

3. I have a "glowback" variety of the lone Cardinal in the Wax Box Cards (McGee).  Im assuming there is a "non-glowback"  I pnly have the one card so not 100% accurate.

4. Desert Shield Parallel.  I have a partial team set of Cardinals. I think 20 of the 29.  Ive notice of the ones I have some are "glowback" and some are "non-glowback"  Im assuming there is one "glowback"  amd one "non-glowback" of each.  However Im only making an assumption and will have to provre the hypothesis as I strive to obtain more lol

5. The Micro cards do not appear to have a "glowback"  I have a team set and only found a "non-glowback" version.  Of cource I will keep my eyes open.

6.  Likewise for the Tiffany parallel and Topps Traded  - I have a team set and both have only the "non-glowbacks"

7.  The only Topps Debut I have are "Non-glowbacks"  but Im not sure O have enough cards to make an assumption.

8.  I have a Cardinals team set of Bowman and O-Pee- Chee.. While i dont have a complete team set of "glowbacks" and "non-glowbacks" I think I have enough of each to make the assumption that there were both as well.

Anyone else come up with anything else??

For #1;  Yes.

FYI - I purchased (2) sealed 1991 Topps Sets - white box versions.  These two boxes have the same style of printing, but have noticeable differences. 

Box. (A) The blue printing is blurrier, the blue color screen print is noticeably offset, the tape has "Topps 40 Years" logos silhuetted on it and most interestingly contains a complete set of non-dark logo, non-glow back cards.

Box. (B) The blue printing is clear, the yellow color screen print is a little offset, the tape is clear with no logo silhuetted, and contains a complete set of non-dark logo, GLOW back cards.

I cross my fingers that I can find reasonably priced dark logo uncut sheets or sealed sets of each for the completness factor.  I am hand collating sets right now.

For #2.

- Yes on the glow and non-glow version dark backs.  For statistics -> I have ~16k 1991 Topps Baseball from various packaging and regions around the country.  About 10% are glow dark logo backs, and about 1/2% are non-glow dark logo backs.  I don't have the volume of the variety of packaging to say that trends are accurate, but its a start.

#3 your variations should exist.

#4 Nice on Desert Storm, I only have one non-fake version and it is non-dark logo, non-glow.

#5 My (1) Micro Set has variation in the back that seems consistent with glow/non-glow.  I have a second micro on its way to see what it looks like.

#6a Tiffany Parrallel, a good sample of what the set is "supposed' to be.

#6b Topps Traded, Have the white stock factory set, and grey stock cello style plastic wrapper packs.  Don't seem to glow for me either.

#7. Topps Debut, mine no glow either.

#8a. O-Pee-Chee has Glow backs too?

#8b. Bowman glow backs.  Doesn't seem to be much posted on here about those.

My add on was the complete set oddity.
