Ok what is the story on this set (along witht he best of the AL and Learning Series Sets). How were they issued and why considered an "Odd Ball" as opposed to a Major Release from Donruss.
Thanks,
Patrick

~ Patrick Please Please Please read my profile before making a trade proposal. My "wants" for my Cardinals collection is accurate from 1900 - 2008. I still have about 12,000Plus Cardinals cards from 2009-present to sort through and enter. Please do not offer any Cardinals cards from 2008-present unless you contact me first as there is a chance I already have it amongst the multitude to still go through. I still have about 30K Cardinals duplicates that are not yet entered in the database as FS/FT. "For the love of the game"

They were only sold as factory sets.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

So were 1981-1989 Topps Traded sets, but they are not listed as oddball.
Honestly, I'm not sure what definitively differentiates the "Best of" sets and the Learning Series from other sets, but I do agree with the classification.

The Traded sets were "extended" versions of the original sets. The learning series and "best of" sets were stand alone sets with the same design.

Sorry, not trying to be a pain, but, how do we explain why the Donruss "Rookies" and "Highlights" sets get Major Release? Niether one of those were extensions, but were stand alone sets with the same design.
Don't get me wrong, I'm in agreement as to how they are classified, but so far we haven't been able to say WHY they should be the way they are. :)

I don't really have an explanation because I don't agree with the way everything is classified here. There are also plenty of parallel sets that aren't listed as parallels, but with all the inserts. It doesn't make sense. I guess it's a matter of opinion. I think the "rookies" set was an extended version of Donruss because of the XRC's, but not the "highlights" set. Just my take on it. There doesn't seem to be a uniformed way of classifying them.

Aaron - I hear you! And thanks, you said it best - "There doesn't seem to be a uniformed way of classifying them." At least, the Highlights and Rookies are treated like traded sets and considered major releases - that is uniform, but there is no defining "line" that says "This is major, this is oddball".
And as far as the parallels - if you see any they can be changed - I've been changing a lot of baseball ones. If you don't have access rights, just send me a private message as to which set has parallels listed incorrectly, and I'll find them and fix them.

Hi Dan - Im still new to this site and have been organizing my collection (used to opurchase or trade and throw in a big box LOL) and entering my collection in the data base. As you or others make changes to the data base (ie updating parallels, sets etc.... Is there a general announcment that changes have been made or just need to check back with each set. Im a newbie and did not see this answer in the FAQs
Also - though a newbie, I agree there should be some published guidelines etc.. distinguishing major releases, parallels, parallels of insets etc....
Thanks,
Patrick

Hi Patrick,
Welcome to our little corner of the Internet. A nice safe place. :)
There are no announcements when sets get re-classified or when insert sets get changed to parallels. I think what happened was all inserts were listed as "inserts" whether parallel or not. Then, the distinction was made, a new category added, and sets are gradually changing as the users get to it. It's too tedious to go through set by set to change them, and there is no way to do a global change, so we're left to doing them when we see them. What's nice is that each super-active member here has kinda taken on a task and really cleaned things up. Find something you enjoy helping with, and have fun with it. I'm enjoying cleaning up the missing glossary entries for baseball. (It was over 7,000 sets missing info before I started and it's down under 4,500 right now! Although, it is getting tougher to fix up what is remaining.)
As for paralells - we tend to only list a parallel of the base set as a "parallel". Parallels of inserts are just inserts (though I do see the benefit of possibly having yet another distinction, but also know all the work that would be involved in the reclassification of all those sets - just look at any Donruss baseball release in 2005, as an example).
Have fun!

In the end, the classification ends up being in the hands of the person who submits the checklist. As we can see by looking at some of the checklists themselves, not everyone is as careful as others when adding and classifying checklists.
One more thing to Partagas, as you become accustomed to how the website operates, click PERMISSIONS at the bottom left and go through some tutorials, and you will be able to do more things on here too as you learn the proper methods. Welcome to the site!

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.
