Your question sounds a little mixed up. There is a difference between hobby and retail when buying packs. Hobby will generally net you more special parallels, short prints, inserts, autographs than retail. Base is just a term for the normal cards in the set. I guess there have been times when companies have used a thicker stock for hobby base sets compared to retail base sets.

Should be the foiling. Last year's was gold foiling on the Hobby and dark blue foiling on the Retail.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

I am interested to know as well. I received some cards from a break that are thicker than cards that I purchased and pulled from a box from my local hobby shop. There does not appear to be any other designation or difference other than the thickness of the card. More info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Without seeing the cards, the differences have usually involved one or more of the following:
-- Hobby being thicker than Retail
-- Hobby has a holo (rainbow) finish on the front while Retail doesn't
-- One has gold foil stamping on the front (usually Hobby) and the other has silver or blue or something else
-- Rookies may be serial numbered in Hobby and unnumbered in Retail

my neighbor gave me his collection, so i'm just sorting everything & trying to add everything on here. he said my cards are all retail ones, not hobby ones.

I'm also unsure what the difference is this year. The 20 card hangers are retail, right?

I don't have both versions from this year, but I have some 2021 that I bought retail and some 2022 of unknown origin. The 2022's are much thicker than the retail from last year, so I'm assuming they are the hobby (base) version.

This set and others really need clarification between the Retail and Hobby (which we for the most part state as the base set) when they are listed. The different varies from year to year. I have seen many times members get in a hurry to get sets listed but not clarify any different or notes or check list different.
