1999 Collector's Edge Masters Football Forum

I just recently bought a collection from a guy and he had a good number of Collector's Edge in it. As I've been logging it into the database, I've found that mine seem to be missing serial numbers. On the back is a little white box and all of the scanned images on the site have a serial number, but my white boxes are blank. I have base, Holosilvers, and Hologolds from this set, plus some base from other Collector's Edge sets and years that should be serial-numbered according to this site, but none of mine have numbers.

I looked on COMC and found they have some parallels and inserts distinguished with "non-numbered," but none of the base like I have. Can anybody provide some insight?

As I mention on several threads when this is asked, many companies will produce extras in case there are returns and replacements are needed. Obviously, they would not be serial numbered. When these companies go bankrupt, and the liquidators move in, the warehouses are emptied and all of these extras get released out into the hobby. 99.9% of the time, these were not released in packs.

As for the stance for listing on TCDB, they fall into one of two categories

1 - Printing misfire (in packs)
2 - Backdoored product (liquidated)

Neither are listable here.

Thanks, Dan. It makes me curious how this guy came into so many of them. Interesting to think about the provenance of our collections sometimes.

He probably had connections to the liquidator or to the person that was the primary purchaser from the liquidator. This is why you'll see tons of "printing plates" on ebay from 1 company only with 1 seller. One must open lots of a product to get a scouple plates. When 1 seller has 100s, you have to wonder how that happened. Same as when only 1 seller has many "errors" (and no one else does) or other oddities.

I pulled a couple dozen Fleer basketball cards with missing serial numbers from dollar store repacks. They were all from the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons (i.e. right before Fleer went bust) so they were likely purchased in liquidation as Dan suggests. I found it odd that I pulled two unnumbered copies of the same SN50 Luol Deng rookie card; made me wonder how many extra copies they produce as potential replacements for damaged cards. 

Crazy you posted this. I ran into one yesterday in my boxes of football I'm going through.  Under a magnifying glass I was able to tell the number.  It was stamped but It clearly didn't get the gold coating but the number out of 5000 was there. 

1999 Collector's Edge Masters NNO Sentinels cards

Hi. I was recently looking up some 1999 Collector's Edge Masters cards on Comc.com and realized that the Sentinels insert set cards came either as a preview card(with Preview written in the little white box on the back of the card) or Serial-Numbered up to to 500. But Comc.com also had 2 Sentinel cards, a Dan Marino and a Randy Moss, listed under non-numbered, and the white box on the back are blank. The reason I mention it is because I have just spent the last hour trying to look up my Sentinels Peyton Manning but I  couldn't find any information about it. The only ones I found were either Preview or Serial-Numbered...my Peyton Manning card is non-numbered. I got the card in a CE Masters pack back in 1999 when they first came out. Does anyone know anything else about the no-number card? I would love to get help on this. Thanks
