I do believe that 1000 number was made up by the magazine. They say the same for the Bobby Allison card in the NASCAR set, but it's significantly rarer than 1000 would make it. They also have the ink color wrong- it's silver, not black as they say. I was lucky enough to pull one, and I know of only two others available in the hobby. This is one of the most common NASCAR sets ever produced, there should be more out there. COMC has never had one for sale.
The cards were not serially numbered, but they are rare. Therw was also no seal or marking of any kind, so there's no way to really tell if it was pack pulled or some guy signing stacks of cheap cards in his garage or basement. Since I pulled mine I have no doubt it's real.
There's actually one for sale on Ebay right now, which surprised me. The only one with silver ink, for $30 is real.
I actually had somebody remove me from his Facebook friends list because I would not sell my copy to him.
VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.
