1983 Topps 1952 Reprint Series Baseball Forum

I've grown my vintage collection significantly by starting with reprint sets.  To my knowledge, they have complete reprint sets available for 1952, 1953, and 1954 Topps through Topps Archives.  They also have complete reprint sets available for 1948, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, and 1953 Bowman through Card Collectors Company (CCC).  I started with a few of these sets that were initially inserted into pages of a binder.  Little by little, I replaced the reprinted cards with originals that I could afford, while always being able to maintain a "complete set". 

What do you think?  Have you tried this method of vintage card collecting, or something similar?

That's a pretty cool way to build a set. I've never heard of anyone doing it that way. Everyone has their own way to put  set together. What ever it may be. I made a 1953 reprint set pack by pack. And ended up buying two boxes of it. It still didn't get me a full set. There were about a dozen or so players who didn't want their card in the 1953 reprint set for what ever reason. Mickey Mantle was under an exclusive contract with Upper Deck when the 1953 reprint set came out. If I recall, Upper Deck made a card just for that reason.

of course, the main objective of collecting is to have fun...

I know a fellow in another group that bought the T206 tobacco card reprint set and is gradually replacing each with the original..

I have applied the topps archives from 2001, 2002 and others in a different way...when building my 61 set, I use the archives version of some of the expensive mantle, mays, aaron etc cards in place of the original ones just to keep the cost reasonable for me...some may not like that approach, but it works for me!

I kind of like this idea.  Most of my cards are in boxes so i would not get the visual effect of seeing a complete set in binders.  My 57 set is in a binder and is nearing completion so the number of empty pockets is dwindling but if they made a reprint of that set it might look nice to have the pages full.

Like someone else said, whatever's fun for you. I've thought about buying reprints every now and then, but I just couldn't pull the trigger. I want the actual vintage cards. For me, I'd rather have one mediocre actual 1952 or T205 card than 50 reprints. The age has meaning to me somehow. I was so tempted to pick up a 1953 Satchel Paige reprint. But I wanted the real thing. I wanted to know that some kid may have held that card while listening to Satch pitch on the radio.
