I was at a card show this weekend, and ran into a dealer who was selling some cards from this set. He doesn't normally deal in racing cards, but gets them in large lots he buys. I got to talking with him, and he mentioned he had a relative in this set, and it was the one racing set he actually collected (and bought packs when they were new). I commented on it being the 1973 issue, however he was 100% certain it was a 1972 issue, since he had such a connection to it when it was released, and what we have as the 1972 issue was actually issued in 1973. I didn't think too much about it at the time, and chalked it up to maybe a foggy memory. However, when I got home I double checked Beckett, and they have the "Race USA" as the 1973 set and the "Drag Nationals" as the 1972 set, so the way they are listed on here agrees with Beckett.
Now, I went a step further, and started reading the backs of a bunch of the cards. There are no years on them (or on any packaging I can find), but there are cards in the 1972 Drag Nationals set that refer to 1972 being completed, and cards from the 1973 Race USA set that refer to the upcoming/in process 1972 season. Look at the backs cards 9 & 11 in the 1973 Race USA set and cards 1 & 4 in the 1972 Drag Nationals set (parallel Canadian set has most of the scans) and see what I mean.
Are the years on these sets reversed? Has Beckett been wrong for all these years? After spending time looking at the text on the back of cards, I think they probably are. Interested in hearing the opinion of others before doing anything to potentially correct this.
