I played against Piatt in high school. He was tough.
John Burkett (who would go on to pitch in the big leagues for around 15 years) was also on that Beaver Bobcats team. They were a pretty amazing duo for a high school team. They would alternate starts, and they had another big guy who threw even harder than they did to bring in as a reliever in the rare occasion that they needed one.
Their senior year, my team was tied with them for the section lead with 3 or 4 games left in the season. Piatt injured his leg in an accident and was out for the remainder of the season, so we thought we had a good chance to overtake them. But Burkett pitched the last 3 games in a row, including a complete game to beat us in extra innings in the season finale to win the section and move on to the state playoffs. Good memories. Could have been much better if we scratched across one more run.
