In my mind, Ultra is a brand manufactured by Fleer (or Upper Deck, or some Belgian conglomerate, or whomever) that is known on its own merit. I feel that brands such as Ultra, Stadium Club, Flair, SP, Collector's Choice, and Bowman stand on their own and don't need the manufacturer name as a descriptive. One-and-done issues like Pro Set Platinum probably need them. Frankly, I would approve of the Topps being dropped from Gypsy Queen and Allen & Ginter listings, but that's just me. And from memory, I'm fairly certain Skybox Impact football sets on the site have years with and without the Skybox descriptive.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

As I read through this thread, I keep coming back to two thoughts:
1) "Because Beckett always did it this way" should never be a valid excuse to override database listing guidelines.
2) "It would be a lot of work to fix this error everywhere in the database" should not be a reason to not fix errors as they are found.
This post may be a non-sequitur, but I felt it needed saying.

Ultra is one of those brands that came out in the early 90's whereby the brand transcended the card company that was producing it. Others that come to mind that are similar from that era are Stadium Club, Finest, Pinnacle, Flair, SP, etc. Billy’s comment about never meeting someone that refers to it as “Fleer Ultra” is very telling.
The modern releases are entered in as simply "Ultra" in order to keep the lineage going with the early releases:

As always, if the majority of site members think that brands like these should be changed to include the card company, then it can definitely be changed.

Though I usually defer to Billy in all matters of cards, I have to add this to the discussion. I was already half-way a geezer when Fleer Ultra came out. Being raised on Topps and Fleer only, it was natural to put the company's name in front of Stadium Club or Ultra just to differentiate the manufacturers. Billy, you were probably in singel digits age wise and it would be natural for anyone of your age and younger not to have a need to differentiate. Just shows how the passing of time affects all things.
