Lifelong fan here, just turning 40 this year - went to the Super Bowl as a 9 year old with my dad and can remember some of the Doug Williams/Jay Schroeder years before that even. Hey, I'm even the #1 ranked WFT collector on here - go figure.
Without getting into the Redskins name issue which is now past history regardless of one's stance, I really grew to like the "Washington Football Team" moniker. A forced "nickname" isn't really required in sports, I root for my team because my family and I are originally from the D.C. area, so I'd root for any team there regardless of look and name - I'm loyal to my home and family history. I liked the uniqueness of having no real name, more soccer-esque really and somewhat cutting edge and cool considering North American naming conventions for sports (i.e. where you "have" to have a mascot, at least in most people's eyes).
I don't feel the NFL and Soccer crowds mix that well though, and I don't think NFL crowd really "got" the Washington Football Team name - instead making fun of us that a team was called "Football Team" (though how many soccer teams are called 'FC' for "Football Club"). In my opinion its a bit of a isolating viewpoint (either not aware that most clubs outside of N.A. don't have nicknames or don't think that is a style we need to conform to). I thought it was a sly marketing manuever from the outset and had a lot of unique possibilities whereas a nickname will just blend in like everyone else.
As for Commanders, it's meh to me. I'm not angry about it, not excited about it either. I like that we generally kept a similar W to the one in WFT. I like that we have our colors carry forward. I'm not a fan (yet) of the black unis, seeing as that was never a classic look of ours (I'd have preferred a yellow pants alternate akin to our 70s style).
