NHL officially approved Arizona Coyotes move to Salt Lake City, new name and branding to be announced. Arizona will get an expansion team if they can get an arena in the new 5 years

I heard of this news. I wonder if the name will remain the same with the move. I doubt that Arizona will build a new arena within 5 years. The voters recently rejected the construction of a new arena.

It's been a very long, odd saga for over 15 years. And the end came so abruptly. Reminds me a lot of Atlanta's move to Winnipeg. You didn't really hear too much then one day rumors swirled and the next day the moving trucks arrived. One good friend of mine is a huge Coyotes fan and has grown enough attachment to the players that he says he's going to root for Utah, at least for a little while. Another friend of mine lives in SLC and is very excited to get a team.

NHL counting it as an entirely new franchise, all Coyotes players and assets transferred but the history of the Yotes stays in Arizona

I believe part of the deal is Arizona's previous owner retain rights to the name, trademarks, uniforms etc should he get a future expansion grant and wish to renew the glorious history of the Coyotes.

That team should have been relocated years ago. At least people will show up for the games in Salt Lake. Gary Bettman is a stubborn mule who has over stayed his time as commissioner of the NHL.

We used to get to Phoenix every winter to see a few hockey games. The last time was about 10 years ago. Hockey was the main reason we went - flights were cheap, game tickets were dirt-cheap, Canadian dollar was worth more back then, and the weather was great. At the games, there were usually more fans for the visiting team, especially if it was against a Canadian team or Minnesota. Saw eleven games over the years there, and the 'Yotes had a record of 9-1-1 in those games. Made a real fan out of me. That was back in the old Gila River Arena. Great place - lots of shops and restaurants (loved Margaritaville), fountains, etc. Great atmosphere. Too bad they couldn't get along with the city of Glendale. Sad to see them go, but Salt Lake City is 10 hours closer for me to drive, so may make a road trip there someday. Will probably cheer for them there, as they have a boatload of great young talent that will be fun to watch grow into a contender.

Understand Buzz is one of the frontrunners for the name. Utah is the Beehive state. Triple A baseball team is the Bees etc.
Personally I'd go with the Utah Saints.
As Gary Bettman would tell you when talking about the NHL, you just know something good is gonna happen.
