Moments Frozen in Time

by banny - 50 cards (Last updated on Nov. 22, 2017)

1. 2007 Topps #479 Chris Shelton

It's July 2sd, 2006. Detroit's Chris Shelton has just homered off Pittsburgh's Ian Snell, in the top of the second inning at PNC Park. How do I know?

The scoreboard is the clue. In another game, Atlanta is leading Baltimore, 6-2, in the seventh inning. July second is the only day with that score, at that time, featuring those two teams; where Shelton homered on the road.

2. 1965 Topps #132 World Series Game 1 - Cards Take Opener

These World Series cards are self-explanatory, but are still cool. On Oct 7th, 1964, in the bottom of the sixth, Whitey Ford has just surrendered a two run homerun to Mike Shannon of the Cards. Catcher is Elrod Hendricks. Plate ump is Frank Secory and base ump is Ken Burkhart. You can almost feel Ford's dejection.

3. 1971 Topps #275 Vada Pinson

June 24th, 1970. Pinson has just been thrown out at the plate, trying to score from third on a flyball hit by Graig Nettles, in the top of the 8th at Yankee Stadium.
Bobby Murcer made the throw, that's Thurman Munson holding the ball, and looking toward the ump for the call.

4. 1971 Topps #5 Thurman Munson

July 16th, 1970. Oakland A's pitcher, Chuck Dobson slides under Thurman Munson's tag in the 4th inning at Yankee Stadium.

5. 1971 Topps #355 Bud Harrelson

May 30th, 1970. Houston Astros at New York Mets. Top of the sixth inning, Joe Morgan has just stole second base as Bud Harrelson applies a late tag. Ken Boswell playing second, and Nolan Ryan on the mound.

6. 1971 Topps #310 Tommie Agee

I believe this to be from May 30th, 1970. Only game I could find from this era, where Dennis Menke is at ss, and Joe Morgan at second for the Houston Astros.
Though it looks as if ump, Ken Burkhart is about to call Agee out, the ball has gotten away, and Agee is safe. Either the first or fifth inning.

7. 1971 Topps #492 Ken Boswell

May 28th, 1970. Shea Stadium. Ken Boswell is turning the middle part of a double play, and forcing the Cardinal's Vick Davallilo at second base.

8. 1971 Topps #118 Cookie Rojas

August 16th, 1970. K.C. at New York. Bottom of the 6th, Cookie Rojas is forcing out Ron Woods at second base after Gene Michael has just grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. The scoreboard is a big clue on this one.

9. 1973 Topps #370 Willie Stargell

Not sure on this. Obviously Willie Stargell is about to put out Terry Harmon at first, but if you blow up the image, the guy, who I assume is the first base coach, his # is 23. That was Oscar Gamble. He didn't join Phils until June of '72. I thought it might be from May 29th, in the fourth inning. It may be Bill DeMars as coach.
UPDATE: C2Cigars has shown me that it is Billy DeMars.

10. 1973 Topps #542 Pat Corrales

June 14th, 1972. San Diego Padres at Chicago Cubs. Bottom of the second. Ferguson Jenkins has just been thrown out at home trying to score from first on a double by Don Kessinger. Pat Corrales holds the ball.

#1 is wrong. That's an Oakland Athletics uniform.

#3; it's spelled "Vic Davalillo"

Corrected. I was thinking Kansas City A's, and wrote Royals. Also, it's Chuck Dobson, not Pat.

This is one of my favorite lists on here. Was a lot of fun to read. Keep up the good work!

Fantastic list, and very impressive detective work!
I'm planning to steal a couple of these cards to add to my "HOF photobombs" list...
I wonder if Topps deliberately used a photo from Buchholz's no-hitter, which they also mention in the blurb on the back.

George Brett Topps 93 (or 94?) card shows the scoreboard, should be easy to pinpoint.

#20; That's #3 on the uniform, not 23. So it's Billy DeMars. BTW, Oscar Gamble joined the Phillies after the end of the 1969 season.

1994 UD #362 CHris Hammond (June 6 vs Padres, McGriff out at first)

Also, doesn't the squirrel card qualify? I had searched a few but i cant remember them.

Er...#22 "Miggy" Montero played for the D-Backs, not the Angels in 2013. Oh, and I love that card.

This list is just awesome!

I think #8 is August 24, 1991. Raines stole second in that game, and it was the only game Chicago played at Cleveland that was a day game.

#8 is updated, thank you, Pistonfan.

Great work, your time and effort to research the specific games on each card is awesome.  There are a lot of great action shots here captured perfectly by the photographers, and many are definitely worth collecting for in my opinion.  There is an interesting article from 'Sports Collectors Digest' that includes an interview with former Topps employee Butch Jacobs, who described the process of how the photos for each individual card were selected from back in the 70's and 80's.  Looking forward in revisiting your list once updated again.

Great list here. Of course, the only two times the Orioles are involved, is when they’re losing. Even former Oriole JJ Hardy couldn’t get on the positive side of things with the Brewers.

A suggestion: http://www.tradingcarddb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/134018/cid/9466307/2017-Topps-226-Logan-Morrison

Morrison rounds third on his way to scoring. Kyle Seager awaits a late relay throw.

That play was on June 14, 2016 in a 8-7 Rays victory.
