Rarely seen but un valued cards

1. 2012 Perfect Game Cedar Rapids Kernels #20 Matt Scioscia

The factory sealed sets included a Matt Scioscia card that had the incorrect players image on the front. I believed it to be Frazier Hall, a fellow teammate. The gift shop gave the corrected version of this card out as a single when you purchased a new team set late in the season. If you acquired your set at the SGA or purchase a set earlier in the season, you didn’t receive this card, or probably didn’t even know it was available.

2. 1990-91 ProCards CBA #18 Pat Durham

In the factory sealed set an error version of the Pat Durham card featured an image on the front that was not Pat but a former teammate even doning a different uniform. If you purchased a set from the souvenir stand or obtained yours from the SGA it does not have the corrected version of the card. Fans were made aware that they could get a corrected Pat Durham card by visiting the team office which was not at the arena, but a block and a half away. It’s hard to imagine very many people went to claim this card.

3. 1975 TCMA Cedar Rapids Giants #16 Jim Ray

Sets acquired at the stadium either from the souvenir stand or perhaps a SGA event would contain the correct versions of all the cards. It was common practice for TCMA to make a deal with the team for 500 or 750 sets, but then retain the printing rights to do with as they wish. Team a sets could be ordered through a catalog, at which point TCMA would print what ever quantity they needed to fill orders. This is where the error likey occurred. A small number of sets exist with the Jim Ray card having the Anderson Rangers logo on the reverse.

4. 2009 Perfect Game Cedar Rapids Kernels #NNO Nate Kaeding

Between 2002 and 2014 the Cedar Rapids Kernels set were sponsored by Perfect Game and apparently made an agreement to have naming rights on the set. I say this because the designs, especially on the backs, closely resemble Grandstand cards, one of the big minor league set producers at the time. Some kind of promotional agreement was struck up with former Iowa Hawkeye Quarterback Nate Keading. He would attend the July 5th home game and throw footballs into the crowd. This card was produced with the intentions for fans to have it autographed at the signing table during the game.

5. 2017 Choice Midwest League All-Stars #NNO Yordan Alvarez

I don’t have the knowledge about how or why this card was distributed as of yet. But it was made by Choice the manufacturer of the MidWest League All-Star set. Yordan Alvarez is present in the set with the same misspelling of his last name on the front. However the image on the front is cropped differently and is without a card number. It’s been suggested in a couple eBay listings that it’s a “SGA Promo.”

6. 2004 MultiAd Iowa Cubs #NNO Cubbie Bear

This card wasn’t issued with the team set, but rather produced for Cubbie Bear to hand out to the small fans he had interactions with. How many of these remain in decent condition after being loved by the children?
