Rejected! Players Who Refused to Sign an Autograph For Me

by IfbBirdsCards - 5 cards (Last updated on Dec. 10, 2017)

1. 2013 Topps #119 Chris Davis

(Actually team set card, same design)
Refused to sign for anybody at Bowie Baysox rehab assignment.

2. 2013 Topps #463 Jason Hammel

(Actually team set card, same design)
Told me that he would come back and sign after the game prior to a rehab start in Bowie. I waited and waited but never saw him. I then learned that he left the stadium during the 5th inning!

3. 2013 Topps #468 Anthony Gose

I actually recruited my dad to get this one signed at an Erie-Bowie game. There were some girls standing next to him. When he came out, the girls started asking him to sign. Gose snarled and asked “why would you want me to sign anything?” He warmed up for the game and snuck off the field, signing exactly 0 autographs.

4. 1991 Topps #651 Alan Mills

Alan would sign any cards you wanted as the Bowie PC. However, after being promoted to the Orioles’ bullpen coach, he won’t sign any Yankees cards, only Orioles.

5. 2013 Topps Update #US252 Preston Claiborne

Prior to a game against the Baysox, I asked him to sign. He said “not now, kid” and sat down and did nothing. 20 minutes later, I asked again and he replied again “not now, kid.” I asked again before the teams took the field and once again he said “not now, kid.” After this, I just canned the idea and went back to my seat. Oh, and he got lit up when he came in as a relief pitcher that night. Sweet revenge.

I actually love this list.  The stories are great and I think it is hilarious that you remembered it enough to make it a list.  I would say keep it coming, but I also don't want to hear you were being rejected, so I guess I'll say hopefully it doesn't grow.  If you do come across someone who refuses though, I'll pay attention for the story!

Great stories, those are always the best....LOL.  I once followed Kerry Wood from left field all the way to home plate trying to get him to sign a baseball.  He signed a few quick autographs over the railing as he swiftly walked on by, but it wasn't my lucky day unfortunately.  Nice list.

I also have a story about Ripken that I shared at the players depicted signing autos list.

My first attempt to ever get an autograph was rejected by Leon Durham.  In fact, the only Cub signing that day was some rookie infielder called Sandberg. I wonder if he ever made it.

I don't get the Gose one. Isn't the whole point of learning baseball to impress girls so they ask for your autograph?

The game I tried to get his auto was right after the Tigers sent him from the big league team to AA, so he was probably more than a little irritated, but still, you’re going to disappoint some girls by not taking 30 seconds of your time to sign a few autographs because of your own issues. Plus, he should have been happy that someone even wanted his autograph in the first place.
