2018 Card of the Day

by Billy Kingsley - 51 cards (Last updated on Feb. 20, 2018)

1. 2009-10 Upper Deck Artifacts #60 Sidney Crosby

February 20th, from a store-collated repack I purchased in September 2017 and saved for the project. First time breaking into it. I am beginning to realize that I built up such a big stash for this project that I will probably have a lot of them left when the year is done...I have been saving cards since 2015 afterall!

2. 2000-01 Fleer Futures - Copper #194 Elton Brand

January 1st. To ensure that the project began with an Elton, I had my mom dig through my COMC box until she found one! If I had done it all the cards would have counted for today.

3. 2016-17 Fleer Showcase - Flair Showcase #13 Henrik Lundqvist

January 2nd. Again, I had my mom find this person specifically because he is my favorite hockey player. My favorite NASCAR driver is too expensive on COMC so he won't be appearing tomorrow.

4. 1992 Maxx IMHOF #3 IMHOF Rotunda

January 3rd. I wanted to get NASCAR in next, and so I pulled a pack from a box I had been sent (thanks, Angus!) and opened it up. First card out of the pack was one I needed, so it is the card of the day.

5. 2015-16 Upper Deck Contours - Jumbo Fabrics #JJ-CG Claude Giroux

January 4th. First card truly randomly out of the COMC box. I bought it on there because I thought it was cool the Flyers wore bright orange and I didn't have a relic from them in my collection. Now I do! The orange is darker in person, it scans differently than it looks.

6. 2005-06 Bowman - Chrome Refractors #9 Stephen Jackson

January 5th. Just a random pull out of my COMC box. Refractors are my all-time favorite parallel concept and I really have an addiction to serially numbered cards so I purchase as many as I can find (that aren't too expensive)

7. 2018 Sports Illustrated for Kids #692 Will Zalatoris

January 6th. I maintain a subscription mainly to get the cards, though I do read the magazine as well. They push college way too much, there were 4 this month. As near as I can tell, this is the first card ever made for this guy.

8. 1994 Star V.I. Model Search #15 Robbin Basker

January 7th. I love when people send me cards I am not expecting. When they are bikini girls, even better!

9. 2001-02 Upper Deck Inspirations #161 Casey Jacobsen

January 8th, part of a set I'm working on via COMC. This was originally a redemption card.

10. 1999-00 Upper Deck Black Diamond - Diamond Cut #91 Elton Brand

January 9th. Part of my Elton binge.

Great start to the project with a serial numbered card!

Yeah that was a nice bonus...but not too surprising considering my COMC habits, lol

Jan. 3, 2018 - 8:39AM

Cool Project Billy.

Jan. 3, 2018 - 10:21AM

Man I wish Fleer still made NBA cards.  Flair cards are awesome.

Thanks Kirk!

Me too Shannon. They were my favorite company for the NBA. They still owed me three redemptions when they went under, too!

Jan. 7, 2018 - 11:20PM

Man I wish Star still made V I Model Search cards.  What is V I anyway?

Based on the copyright on the back it appears to be Venus Swimwear International, with VI standing for Venus International. Yes, I actually read the back!

Jan. 25, 2018 - 11:44AM

Very cool project to undertake for the year.

Jan. 28, 2018 - 8:38AM

Shouldn't #27 say "January 27th"?

I don't know what you are talking about ;)

Glad you finally got your David Robinson Electric Court!  I was looking for it online for you one day, and I remember I ended up seeing two different David Robinsons in that Electric Court checklist and I wasn't sure which one it was you needed.  I am pretty sure that after I confirmed it with you, the card I was looking at online was no longer available.

Good move switching to reverse order, Billy.

I was hoping it would make the sample image on the main page change every day, but no such luck.

Thanks Shannon, for a one-per-pack card I don't know why it proved to be so elusive!

Feb. 7, 2018 - 2:52PM

That Celtic card is epic!

Feb. 9, 2018 - 9:37PM

The Sample card for lists is always the #1 card. You'll have to leave the List Settings for Display as "Ascending" and resort the cards so the newest card is card #1.

I'll try it for now...not sure if I am going to want to put in that effort for the entire year, or will have the time all the time.

Chad- thanks! it has a great photo of two of the all-time greatest...and one I had never seen before.

Feb. 11, 2018 - 10:52AM

Right now you only have 40 cards to sort into order.  After they're sorted it's only a matter of sorting (moving) one card each day.

Feb. 11, 2018 - 11:20PM

February 11th card. Look at Dryden's mask and equipment compared to today's. He and goalies of his era and older must look at today's goalies and just mutter "Wimps."
