2013-14 NBA Rookie Review

1. 2013-14 Panini #196 Michael Carter-Williams

Michael Carter-Williams was named NBA Rookie of the Year for 2013-14, and the award was well deserved. He led the rookies in almost every statistical category, and even managed to be named Player of the Week the very first week he was in the NBA. He didn't let up, and put up 1,167 points- one of only two rookies to post 1000 points during the 2013-14 season. He ranked 8th in steals and 7th in steals per game during the season. 11th overall pick in the draft, a steal for the Sixers.

2. 2013-14 Panini #186 Victor Oladipo

Oladipo had an excellent season of his own accord, and was the only other rookie to post 1000 points- 1106 to be exact, and he played in 10 more games than Carter-Williams did, playing in 80 of 82 games. He ranked tied for 10th in steals on the season, with Paul Millsap of the Atlanta Hawks.
Victor Oladipo was taken second in the draft.

3. 2013-14 Panini #171 Mason Plumlee

Plumlee has the makings of a superstar. Your writer is a long time Nets fan and at the start of the season, Plumlee was not a very good player. But as the season wore on, he really started to develop his skills, and I suspect, had he been as good as he was at the end of the season all year long, Michael Carter-Williams may not have had such an easy time taking ROY. Plumlee is the younger brother of 2012-13 rookie Miles Plumlee, currently the starting center of the Phoenix Suns. Mason was taken 22nd in the draft.

4. 2013-14 Panini #188 Trey Burke

Trey Burke was one of the few bright spots for an otherwise disappointing season for the Utah Jazz. The Jazz started the season with a long losing slide, and didn't start winning until Burke came back from injury. He appears poised to be the Jazz's point guard of the future, if he can stay healthy and remains with the team. Before the 2013-14 season began, I had picked Burke as the most likely candidate to win Rookie of the Year. He was taken 9th in the draft.

5. 2013-14 Panini #195 Tim Hardaway Jr.

Watching Tim Hardaway Jr. improve over the season was one of the few things that could be dubbed fun for the Knicks this season. As his playing time went up, his skills noticeably improved. The son of former Warriors and Heat guard Tim Hardaway, the Knicks surprised many by taking the younger Hardaway- as the team and Hardaway Sr. have had animosity in the past. The Knicks got him at the 24th slot in the draft.

6. 2013-14 Panini #176 Steven Adams

New Zealand's Steven Adams has stepped into a fairly large role with the always contending Thunder. The Thunder nabbed him with the 12th pick in the draft.

7. 2013-14 Panini #194 Giannis Antetokounmpo

Antetokounmpo has easily the hardest name to write or pronounce in this year's rookie class, and watching several Bucks games, most of the broadcasters prefer to refer to him via his nickname- "The Greek Freak". Many analysts have stated that he has the most potential of anyone in the draft, but only time will tell. The Bucks took him 15th in the draft.

8. 2013-14 Panini #189 Pero Antic

Every year, several undrafted players come into the NBA, some from the USA and some from abroad, and make a name for themselves. Antic, a native of Macedonia, was the biggest impact player of that class in 2013-14. A 6 foot 11 power forward, Antic can put up 3s or play in the paint, although he seems to prefer the former.

9. 2013-14 Panini #172 Anthony Bennett

Anthony Bennett was the #1 pick in the NBA draft, and most people have already labeled him as a failure, but it's too soon for that- he fought injuries all season long, and thus cannot be judged on one injury ridden season. He only got into 52 games, and didn't play much in any of them, logging only 663 minutes played all year. Hopefully we will see what he is really capable of during 2014-15.

10. 2013-14 Panini #174 Reggie Bullock

Drafted 25th by the Clippers, I only got to see Bullock play once, when Chris Paul was injured. He doesn't get much playing time being the backup to one of the best point guards in the league.
