Year: 2002-03

Set: Pacific (Rate)

Card: #126 Kris Draper

“ A pretty nicely designed set actually, something Pacific didn't always achieve. It looks like something Upper Deck would have done around that time. Now that I'm collecting the NHL on a full time basis, I'm getting more appreciation of Pacific. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Great looking card. Great picture on the front. Everything you need on a card front and legible. Full stats and a head shot on the back and even room for a little blurb about him. Nice job Pacific. ” -davidhandberry

“ I actually really miss Pacific. ” -carthage44

“ Very nice Pacific card. I miss Pacific. I just hope that Panini never acquires the brand name. I like some Panini products but I think they were better when they stuck only to the stickers (pardon the pun). I love the original Donruss products when Donruss was around and produced them, the new unlicensed Panini products I do not like. ” -captkirk42

“ Always liked the simplicity of the base Pacific design. wish they were still around today ” -hckydv7

“ Actually, I really like this card, a lot. Pacific was so underrated, they actually may have been a gem. I was unfamiliar with them as they came on strong while I was out, but every time they pop up on RCOTD, I seem to like them. Only negative, the lower case first letter. Everything else, a great look! ” -muskie027

“ Pacific had some nice hockey designs back in the early 2000's. This card reminded me of the Detroit-Colorado wars from that era. Some great hockey... ” -BlueJays77

“ Now there is a classic Red Wing. Mr. Draper was a Selke winner I do believe and his name is synonymise with defensive play. He won many a ring with the DRW during his time in the league. I do not like the incorrect grammar errors, such as all lower case letters, and they are small too!! Other than that a typical entry level set. ” -ranfordfan

Wasn't he the player who was crushed into the boards, face first, from behind by Claude Lemeuix which started the great Red Wings - Avalanch rivalries of yore? Leading to Darrin McCarty's revenge and a couple of Patrick Roy goalie fights at center ice? Those were the days.

Nice card and agree that they could/should have capitilized team , player,  and position on the front of the card but besides that a good looking effort overall. May 29, 1996 Claude Lemieux / Kris Draper just like it happened yesterday . Must have been replayed a hundred times. Brutal hit from behind.

As my wife is a huge Wings fan, we have the revenge game on video. McCarty is one of the players we super-collected (along with Yzerman, Burr, Lapointe, and to a lesser extent, Osgood). The beauty of the revenge game is not only did Mccarty beat down the turtle, he scored the game winner in OT. The only thing that would have made the ending better is if Drapes himself had scored the game winner.

Edit: To talk about Pacific and this set: Pacific actually had some quality products during their hockey run. Much better than their previous year's baseball efforts. Biggest downfall was they got caught up in the parallel-fest of the day, and they had stupid parallels. Some that just made no sense, or were hard to distinguish. And the "retail reds" were always super hard to find. (And when I did find packs somewhere and dropped a boatload of $ on them, I pulled nothing of note. I probably still have them all because they were commons then, and no better now.) The Cramer's Choice inserts (that always had Yzerman) were always in low SN runs, and again, 5 or 6 different parallels. They did have some neat insert set ideas, and adding non-game-used materials were actually a cool concept (netting to make it look like a goal, etc.). Some of my favorite cards of the 1996-2002 period are various Pacific brands. There was actually a lot of good from Pacific. (And their booth at the Spring/Fall Expo was always staffed by some of the nicest people!) Other than their love of parallels (which wasn't as bad as some other companies), I think they were good for the hobby. This set, from what I recall, wasn't much different from the previous couple years. Which sent them down the Upper Deck and Donruss roads of lack of much design change over several years. Solid, but "been there, done that".
