“ A card from one of my most loved sets ” -aussiewayne

“ This set was fun as a kid.... But what a waste of space now as an adult.... Only wanted the santa cards. ” -parsley24

“ I miss coach cards. I miss Pro Set. I miss large football sets. This card is great. ” -switzr1

“ Love it. I liked most of Pro Sets sets all sports. Don't recall them doing baseball but they did Football and Hockey. I might have this card I don't know. I should since he was a Redskin in his playing days. ” -captkirk42

“ THE GREATEST SET EVER! It was over-produced by 10x. But great pictures, tons of stats, coach cards, and lots more. A very, very fun set. ” -cjjt

“ I miss Pro Set. It was a product that was geared towards to the team collector. The brand had some of the largest team sets you will ever find. This particular year was the probably the worse issue by Pro Set. I find the front of the cards to be plain, but I do like the color and back of the card. The text of Pro Set issues was very informative. Pro Set was the only main issue to have issues coach cards since the 1960's. ” -Brendan Barrick

“ Love this set ” -BasketbalHQ

“ Nicely designed card! ” -CollectingAfterDeath

“ One of my favorite sets. Still mad they beat the Bills in the AFC Championship Game in 1988. I always liked him as a coach. ” -muskie027

“ Ah, the glory days of the Bengals, when a win was a win and a tie wasn't considered one. It's been way too long of a slump for them. ” -kents_stuff

have to agree with the size of sets these days, love the large pro set sets even though they have heaps of error and variation cards, makes for a fun and mostly cheap chase

I would caution against using collective words when describing your opinion. I'm sure there are some who share your view, but also some who share mine (and Billy's) - I would very much like to see Coach cards present, moreso than I would offensive linemen (and that's not a knock against the boys in the trenches), and I certainly wouldn't call them "specials" (I assume that's another word for inserts?). Pro Set worked them into the base set, and they were a nice bookend for team sets, which included offensive linemen. Of course, those were nearly 800 card sets.

2020 Donruss, on the other hand, has a 350 card base set. Take away the way too many 100 rookies, and you're left with 250 veterans. If Panini wanted to, they could easily cut the rookies in half to 50, and have two offensive linemen and a coach per team, with a few left over, and there would be a 400 card base set - which it is when you count the 50 SPs in the base set too. Heck, if they really wanted to, they could keep the 100 rookies, add more offensive linemen, and heaven forbid have a 500 card set.

Ultimately, you could (and should) have both. Coach cards wouldn't have to take the place of anything if the sets were large enough to handle a comprehensive checklist. Card companies just don't want to include anyone who isn't a recognizable name in fear of not capturing the casual fan (my opinion; no data to back that up), with the apparent exception of rookies in an effort to capture the investment side of the hobby too, I suppose. But Coaches are just an integral part of the team as any player on the field, and should get the same consideration as any player would.

No, Billy Kingsley.  There should never have been any coach cards, which are specials - the bane of a collector's existence.  Every special takes the place of a player card.  Football card sets, in particular, have a chronic shortage of offensive linemen cards.  If the latter always replaced specials, we collectors would be greatly pleased.

Coaches aren't players, but offensive linemen are, and so are bench players.  For far too many offensive linemen, even good ones, there have have never been any cards, which never fails to infuriate me.  When it comes to rookies, companies have issued cards for late round draft picks and even undrafted rookies, most of whom never set foot on the field in a regular season game.  That's okay if those guys actually play regular season games, but it would make more sense to include them in update sets or even in sets for the following season.  Again, I'd rather see cards for veteran offensive linemen and other players, particularly those who have never had cards.
