They are called "Card Ruiners" in this house for a reason.
I use them as dividers in boxes and I will use them if sending a single card in a PWE (card goes in a sleeve first - always).
Only cards I've ever received in the mail that were damaged were in so-called "Card Savers".
Those members who have recently received cards in the mail from me have seen what I use.

Yes, toploaders are safer to use than "savers". In either case, I put the card in a penny sleeve first. The main problem with toploaders is finding the right thickness for multi-layered cards - too tight & they can squeeze the corners, too loose & the card can slide out and get damaged.
I only use semis for PWE mailings, but I have also used one to create a "card-insertion" device. I trim off seal from the bottom & one complete side, then remove the lower 3/4 of the remaining side. Taper the bottom of the cut flaps to fit within a penny sleeve, but be sure to keep it slightly wider than 2.5". Then, you can insert this into a penny sleeve & slide the card between the plastic flaps, thus avoiding getting corners snagged on the top edge of the penny sleeve (or toploader, if you "go commando" with those).

I was very surprised to hear about all the disdain for semi rigid.
I use rigid for stars and vintage singles that I keep, but if a card I bought at show or received in mail came in semi, I would leave them in there.
I have used semi for decades in pwe trades and have never had an issue.
on receiving end, only issue I have had with semi is when someone uses clear tape instead of masking/painters..

I use toploaders only. Any semi-rigids I receive in trades get reused for other trades - as previously mentioned, they are good for mailing a couple of cards in a PWE. In either case I always use penny sleeves as well.

wow im surprised as well. I find that if people mail in real non machinable pwe .70 stamp instrad of writing no machine and putting a .50 stamp their is no problem with mailing them. I use thick toploaders for relic cards. Semi rigid is my go to. I do not like getting taped up toploaders. I discard those. If I get a toploader in a trade that is in keepable condition it goes to my brother.

"Card Killer" in this house.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.
