Can anybody tell me why we list cards as a variation when the only difference is the dot at the end of Inc and yet I have a 2017 topps card that is different than the 2 that are listed and I was told that was an insert? Sorry but I'm confused.

We need much more info to help you with this. Inserts are just that. They were a stand-alone set released in packages of a larger set. A variation is a different version of a base set card but not a parallel version. Also, parallel sets can have a variation card. So I'd need to know exactly what card you are talking about to give you an exact reason why it is an insert instead of a base variation.

I'm taking a shot on this but the OP may be referring to the Rookie or Veteran Variation cards that come in the FS. It's that or, for 2017, in Topps Update they inserted VAR of S1 and S2 players into packs. If the card was from a FS they are considered their own set because they were released as their own set only on FS (insert). I believe in Update's case that the cards were listed as such because they were released only in Update packs and not S1 or S2 packs it was more logical to list them as their own set. The VAR listed in the main checklist means they were found out in packs within that series.

In comparison to the . and the no . each version could come in corresponding packs. As such, they are listed together. FS cards were slightly different, but not all of them. Admin made the call to have the large mix set instead on making the FS a parallel set because not every card was affected.
