So I’m gonna try and collect a full set of Topps baseball cards, does anyone know which is the easiest set to start with? This is the first time I’ve tried a set collection, I would prefer something pre 1985. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

I'd say 1984 set would probably be the least expensive, thus the easiest to start and complete. Not much in the 1981 set for rookies either making it fairly easy to complete as well.

I’ve also been looking at the 1983 Donruss, is that hard to complete without spending too much?

You'll need 3 big HoF Rookie cards from that set. Wade Boggs, Tony Gwynn and Ryne Sandberg. Arguably the hardest set to complete in the 80's of the big 3 card companies. You can complete 87-89 for $15-$20 combined.=)

I’ve been putting together the 81 Topps set strictly through trades on here. I had maybe 15 or 20 cards when I started and it’s now 88% done in about a year and half. I’ve also got a big chunk of the 85 set done the same way though I lack the McGwire and my Puckett is rough.

I’ve also recently decided to start trying to complete sets. Although I decided to try to put together the Topps Opening Day sets as I feel the shorter checklists will be much more realistic for me.

If you're willing to go post-1985, then 1990 Topps might not be a bad choice. It's sort of a polarizing set, which means certain collectors would probably be happy to trade you a big stack of them. Similar thing for 1988 Topps.

You can also find alot of these mid 80s cards in repacks which is a good way to get cards cheap and gives you trade bait on top of cards for your collection.

Hey, look this direction, BOBSCARDZ, 1980-1989 Topps just about fillup 1 room. If I can't complete most sets or get you near 90% there is something wrong. I have another room 1/2 filled with Donruss. THESE ARE ALL DUPES. Glad to trade or sell. ~BOB~

If you go with 1981 Topps I have several thousand doubles available for trade or sale . It is one of my all time favrite sets and with no moajor rookies it is an inexpensive set to complete.
