It was the early 1900s, Chuck and Bob were sitting at the bar talking about their card collections, Bob said " Hey Chuck, pick me up a pack of baseball cards" OR did Bob say " Hey Chuck, I need a pack of smokes" ?

I keep debating whether I should buy that Honus Wagner card when I get an extra $3 million.

I saw the best cards of my generation destroyed by creases, soft cornered hysterical edge wear, dragging themselves through the hobby shops at dawn looking for a top loader...

Bob definitely needed some smokes to get a card.

Not an easy thread to follow. Smokes and cards don't ring a bell for me.

That's b/c you weren't around 100+ years ago. I'm guessing gum and cards rings a bell though.

Yes, spaz is following the thread....right on. So bergquister read on >>>>
The earliest Baseball Cards were actually Trade Cards that pictured players with various forms of advertising on the back. Pre 1900s.
By the early 1900s Tobacco Products included Baseball Cards to up there sales. Bob wasn't buying "smokes" for the cards, he wanted cigs. Now since they were talking about there collections, he probably pocketed them anyway. If Bob had no interest in Baseball Cards, a Honus Wagner could have been getting soaked sitting on the bar. Kinda like Mom throwing away your cards that were in the attic. lol.
Spaz, referenced gum and cards. Because, now fast forward to the early 50s, similar scenario, young Bob and Chuck stopped in the corner country store, "Hey lets get some gum, got to have enough for a sizeable wad, to blow big bubbles". "Do you want the cards", "nah, just the gum". The point being, Topps Chewing Gum Co. was in the market to sell bubble gum not Baseball Cards. The cards were included to enhance gum sales. Like Honus, a Mantle RC gets tossed in the trash can with the wrapper and other cards. Not exactly what Topps envisioned, that THE BASEBALL CARDS were MORE IMPORTANT then their gum ! .............and the story continues.

As a pre-teen in the late-80's, I actually traded other stuff to kids just to keep their cards from suffering the fate of bike spokes! I kinda wish I'd have left many of those late-80's cards to their fate instead of giving up my toys, candy and GUM.
