First, Happy Birthday to your son!!
I have two boys that collect but don't play. They didn't have an interest in learning how but wanted as many as they could lay their hands on. They trade with their friends at school and each have their own favorite Pokemon that they have gravitated to. As they are getting older, they have less of an interest. My older son of 14 has all but given up on Pokemon. My youngest of 12 still wants them.
They found some info books that told how different Pokemon evolved and wanted to compile a binder to match the book. How was I going to tell them no. It actually sounded like a pretty neat idea.
They have not learned about card condition very well and most cards are well played with, but they definitely had their hours of fun.
I only learned about the sets as a way to help the site. I don't have that much experience with the actual cards. I tried a few times to interact with them to see if I could be interested but I really don't. I know that some can be extremely valuable. Ours are not.
If you or your son have any questions, feel free to ask. If I don't know, maybe my kids will. If they don't, I have a couple friends at work that probably will.
I am one of the members that helps within the site. I work closely with the IRs and can answer most questions. Please send me a message if there is anything I can assist with. If I don't know, I can certainly try to figure it out or direct you to a resource.
