Cal Ripken is my favorite player. I stopped collecting cards in the late 1990s. I was looking as his page(s) of cards and an idea popped into my head. How many pages of cards in the database does Cal have while he was playing compared to the number of pages of cards he has after he retired? The results absolutely amazed me. Cal has 56 pages of cards listed for the time period of when he was playing. HE HAS 173 PAGES OF CARDS AFTER HE RETIRED!!! That's more than 3-times more cards of Cal after he stopped playing compared to the number of cards he had while playing! I knew things got crazy with parrellel sets, but that's insane!

....and yet there are some active players who can make 20 starts or 50 relief appearences and get no card. I think things have strayed too far from the original intent of baseball cards.

Ozzie Smith is my favorite player and his cards are exactly the same way. He retired after the '96 season, so he had cards in 1997, but nothing in 1998 or 1999. But then he started having cards again in 2000 and they really exploded after he got inducted to the HOF. I'd say most of the HOFers from the 60's to early 2000's already have more cards post-career than during their playing days. And the numbers climb more and more every year. The same thing is happening in football and NASCAR too. I can't speak for other sports, but I'm sure it's the same way for the top players of their day as well.

Now I'm intrigued to find whether there are *any* HOFers (post-war playing careers) with less cards after retirement. I suspect not.

I believe this problem doesn't exist for Bonds. Hardly any cards after playing career.

What might be a cool feature idea is to have a retirement year field in PIDs and then you could filter out their post-retirement cards. I think there are a lot of player collectors that limit their collection to active career years.

Ditto Pete Rose, save for a small handfull of throwback moment cards, unless you count unlicenced from either MLB or MLBPA cards

Don't watch most "Stick & Ball" sports these days...
So can only wonder how much retired players get mentioned during game broadcasts...
During races (Nascar/F1/Indy) a lot of retired / drivers who have died get mentioned a good bit...
A number of retired drivers are also doing broadcasts, so stay on peoples minds....
