Just wanted to post and say hi to everyone. Haven't been active in the hobby since I was 20 (now 43). I thought the saturation of card sets was bad in the 90s but holy cow my head was spinning when I see what's out there today!!!
I'm trying to figure out my focus for my collection. I'm sticking with only football for a sport. I'll be collecting all Cleveland Browns cards. Also collecting all of my Favorite players cards (Steve Young).
Beyond that, I have to fight my completist tendencies because it's just impossible to collect all the cards. I've thought about collecting only a certain series (like Stadium Club or Action Packed)
id love to hear your guys thoughts on how you focused your collections

First of all, welcome to one of the greatest card collecting sites on the internet (in my opinion). Everyone here is very friendly and knowledgable. Glad to see you're back in the hobby!
I mentioned my collection and goals in a thread the other day. I collect mainly players; players that I enjoy watching (or did) or that I have a special connection to (hometown, etc). Beyond that, I dabble with building a few sets (I just started 2017 Topps Opening Day today) and collecting autographs as well. The Reds are my favorite team, so I try and pick up those cards when I can. But the focus of my personal collection is definitely the different players; like you said, there's just too much out there (and most of it out of my budget) to collect everything.
-------------------------------
I'll never quit collecting entirely, but I am downsizing. Check out my COMC store and help me thin out what I don't want so I can buy cards that I do want. See something you like? Send me a message on here, and we can knock the price down quite a bit. I'll even take a bit of a loss if it means getting you a card you really want.

I'm a hockey guy so no fears of me stealing any of your cards off people's wantlists LOL. BTW welcome to the site, you will see that this is INDEED the best site on the planet. If you plan on sticking around long term, the $5/mo for premium is worth every penny. It kills off all the annoying ads and the money is used to upgrade the site since it is all open-source. I too quit collecting at about 20 and rejoined when I was 43 so we have that in common. I collect one player exclusively, that being Bill Ranford, I also have an alter ego here on the DB (oilerRCguy) for my other passion of Edmonton Oiler RCs. That is the extent of my collection per say, I do open lots of various boxes for the thrill and also collect OPC hockey base sets as well.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! Are there any tips you all have for quickly/cheaply building my collection up? I need to catalogue my collection on here as I can dump my baseball cards from 70s/80s in trades for football hopefully.

I've found that "staying focused" on a specific direction for my collection is very difficult.
I try to stay with Topps Baseball Base Sets, Stadium Club, and Archives, but my focus can very easily take a different direction.
Welcome to wonderful website for collectors and traders. Good luck in your collecting.
Please take a look at my trade list. I'm always open for a trade.

Let's trade! I keep my Wantlist and For Sale lists updated.

in my football team collection, I just use this database for a have list. I don't even worry about a want list since there is so much material out thiere in modern cards.
I would start with topps regular and stadium club, but get other stuff as trade opportunities present themselves.

I am basically a team collector. Once you get situated, I would love to send you a bunch of Browns cards for some Chiefs.
