I've run across what I think is a problem with a card from the 1969 Topps set. Card #47 Paul Popovich is available in 3 different versions. As described and listed in the 2018 40th edition of Beckett baseball card price guide page 390.
#47A P. Popovich Thick Airbrush $1.00 $2.50
#47B P. Popovich Light Airbrush $1.00 $2.50
#47C P. Popovich C on Helmet $10.00 $25.00
There is a significant difference between values of the A and B version versus the C version. Therefore I think it's important to get the distinction correct. I think the database has the versions listed in the correct order but I believe the images for the B and C versions are reversed. The A version is dead obvious. It's a big black blob (smooth) that covers the logo entirely. The distinction between B and C are less obvious. The B version is still darkened but you can't really make out the C underneath (rough on right). The C version shows evidence of the C logo showing from underneath. Most apparent to identifying this is some light blue sneaking in on the right side of the top of the C. Almost 250 cards are listed by members here so it's significant that it's right. I'm not sure if members entered their inventory by the descriptions listed or by the images shown. My assertion is that we have the images for the B and C versions reversed. I'm not sure how to rectify a situation like this that might affect so many members. Simply reversing the images will correct the database but there is no way of knowing how members entered their inventory. How do we go about correcting this? It's a simple fix to remove and replace the images but that doesn't address the memberships entries.
Version A - Black Blob (smooth)
Our version A. VAR: Thick Airbrush This is correct.
Version B - Logo airbrushed out (rough on right side)
Our version B. VAR: Light Airbrush This is incorrect. This image is of the partial logo showing through.
Version C - C partially visible through airbrushing (light blue to right of top of C) This is an image of the version with the greatest value. Our description and pricing matches up, but the image does not.
Our version C VAR: C on helmet slightly visible through airbrushing This is incorrect. This is the airbrushed version no logo showing rough on the right.
The description for this version is correct in the database but the image associated with it is incorrect. Therein lies the problem. If people entered their inventory by comparing images they've made incorrect entries. If entered by descriptions, then the images associated are wrong. Fixing the images makes us correct, in my opinion. But doing so might interfere with peoples inventories. Not sure the best course of action here. Personally, I'm entering my inventory by the descriptions because it matches with the values associated and hoping the images for B and C can be reversed.
My Autograph Collection Website Emphasis is on the 1969 Cubs. This is still a work in progress as is my collection here at TCDB.
