Card Identification Forum

Hi everyone,

I recently cleared out my ceiling space and came found a whole bunch of cigarette cards. They are all in reasonable condition and I have probably over 100 of them. Attached is an example. Does anyone know where I can find out some more information about these cards? Do they have any value? Some of the other items they were with are date in the mid-late '30s, so not sure if these are the same. I live in Sydney, Australia.

Let me know if you have any ideas.

Value on cigarette cards depends on the set. I've picked some up for as little as 30c American.

I'd check out the forums on vintage non sport to see if anyone knows anything about this brand.

I haven't done any research on this brand, but your card seems to follow the theme of the "Real Photograph" sets of the 1930s.

I noticed the first series checklist isn't listed just 2nd, 3rd and 4th. The sample card might be from that set, or later series going by the titles of the #7 cards in those sets listed. There seem to be plenty of Ebay auctions in Google searches but a quick check didn't come up with checklists (outside of our own Series 4 checklist)

Thanks everyone. I've found out that one set I have is a 1934 Wills Famous Films tobacco card https://immortalephemera.com/movie-collectibles/1934-wills-famous-film-stars-tobacco-cards/. I have about 55 of the 100. I've requested it to be added to the forum. I'll work through the other cards when I get some time :)

The checklist for the  "Small" and "Medium"  1934 Will's Famous Film Stars have been added to the database. FYI, there is an Australian-issued set with the same title but it has a different checklist. As soon as I find one (if I can) I will add that set as well.

The card in the original post is from a 50 card set that was issued in Australia by Godfrey Phillips Ltd. It uses the same photographs as the 1932 De Reske Real Photographs 4th Series that was issued in England by J Millhoff & Co Ltd. During this time period J. Millhoff & Co was a subsidiary of Godrey Phillips Ltd. Godfrey Phillips had an office in Melbourne.

I have a checklist for the 50-Australian set but I don't know the set title. I've seen it listed as "Animal Studies" but I think that is a generic term applied to untitled sets containing animals by the NYPL.

As a side note, the 1932 De Reske Real Photographs 4th Series checklist on TCDB is incorrect. It is actualy from a 1939 set that is also titled "Real Photographs 4th Series" but it was issued by Ardath Tobacco Co.

I'll try to clean all of that up in the next couple days.
