From an article online: Under a deal announced Wednesday, Nola gets a $2 million signing bonus, $4 million this year, $8 million in 2020, $11.75 million in 2021 and $15 million in 2022. Philadelphia has a $16 million team option for 2023 with a $4.25 million buyout.
Let's see - he gets $2 mill just for signing. Doesn't have to do anything else.
2019 $4 mill ($6 mill total so far)
2020 $8 mill ($14 mill)
2021 $11.75 mill ($25.75 total)
2022 $15 mill ($40.75 total)
That's before the team option to buy him out at $4.25 - so even if he gets bought out, it's $45 mill. However, if he's still elite (and let's face it, 3rd place in CYA voting is elite) he'll get 11.75 more in 2023 than the guaranteed amount of the buyout - grand total if he sticks around - $56.75 million.
Nice!
And Brad - yes, he'll see the $15 - whether or not he sees the $16 depends on where the Phillies are. He'll turn 31 that year. There are some ifs of xourse, but even if he's more of a 12-9 type pitcher with an ERA in the upper 3's, the Phils would keep him if they are real contenders for the division.
