Happy birthday to Wayne Gretzky. Can't believe he's 59 already.  He was by far the Greatest Hockey player I ever saw play live and I've been to over 500 hockey games.  There's a case to be made for Greatest Athlete I ever saw as well but I live in a city that produced Michael Jordan and Walter Payton.  My Dad used to tell me stories of how when Bobby Hull picked up the puck behind his net and turned up ice the fans would all stand in anticipation.  Gretzky was that guy of my generation. If you took all his goals away from him he would still be the All-Time scoring leader.  And most telling of all is his nickname.  The Great One. Even the casual sports fan recognizes that name and knows it's him.  Not many cooler names.  Well "Sweetness", "The Big Hurt" are a couple of mine.  Anyway Happy Birthday Wayne.  

Happy 59th to #99! Absolutely one of the most humble all-time greats in any sport. He still refuses to call himself the greatest player in hockey history, always deffering to his idol Gordie Howe.

HBD to TGO. Many may not know this but I never cheered for him growing up, I was always for Moose and Tikk to be honest. Every year 11 and 10 were shaved into my hair for playoff time. #99 may not be in the mood any longer today and to have such a terrible thing on your birthday, especially when I am sure they know one another sucks at best. My friend Leah, her birthday is Sept 11th, need I explain. =(

Addition : And now I also see that it is Vince Carter's birthday as well from looking at the list. Sad sad day for both I am sure.

Gretzky's records are just amazing.
